President Bola Tinubu is set to leave Nigeria for a brief official trip to Paris, France, on Wednesday, April 2.

The announcement was made in a statement from the presidency on the same day. Bayo Onanuga, who serves as the presidential spokesman, mentioned that Tinubu plans to evaluate his midterm performance and highlight significant accomplishments during his time abroad.

Tinubu reaffirmed his dedication to leadership.

President Tinubu’s decision was prompted by recent economic protests. According to the report from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), this influence is evident in the notable rise in the country’s net foreign exchange reserves, which have climbed to $23.11 billion.

As stated by the presidency, the disclosure from the Central Bank of Nigeria highlighted the fiscal reforms initiated by Tinubu since 2023, when the reserve stood at $3.99 billion.

Onanuga further disclosed that the president will continue to engage members of his team and will continue to oversee the activities of governance.

Tinubu sacked NNPC boss

This occurred shortly after the president dismissed the previous Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, and declared the appointment of his successor, Bayo Ojulari.

The president dismissed every board member who was installed along with Kyari in November 2023 as well. This recent move occurred against the backdrop of the continuing dispute involving NNPC Limited and Dangote Refinery, which stands out as one of Nigeria’s significant private refineries.

Previously, the NNPC consented to selling Nigeria’s crude oil to the refinery using Naira, aiming to stabilize the currency and decrease fuel costs within the country.

However, the deal ended a month ago, and the two companies did not renew the contract, which has led to an increase in the price of fuel.

Now retailers are opting for imported fuel instead of purchasing from Dangote. Additionally, the private refinery has started selling its products in dollars after the termination of their agreement.

On April 2, the presidency announced significant changes at Nigeria’s leading oil firm as part of Tinubu’s administration’s move to remove all board members and make new appointments.
