Okpebholo Confronts Senate Deputy President Over Edo Travelers’ Killing

On Monday, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State visited Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, to offer condolences following the killing of travelers in Uromi, within the Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

On Monday, the governor visited the Maitama home of the Senate Deputy President in Abuja.

A group of attackers stopped travelers heading to Kano State for Sallah festivities, searched through their car, and brutally killed them on Thursday. The people who lost their lives were hunters from Kano State.

The information is part of a statement issued by Ismail Mudashir, who serves as the Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate for Media and Publicity. A copy of this statement was provided to The Punch on Monday.

The governor offered his sympathies to the Deputy President of the Senate, hailing from Kano State, assuring that the state administration will support the families of those affected.

The Edo State governor stated that the 14 individuals apprehended in relation to the murders of the travelers will undergo additional questioning in Abuja.

Even though he asserted that those responsible would encounter the harshest consequences under the law, he characterized the murders of the unarmed travelers as tragic and deplorable acts.

It’s regrettable that this occurred within our state. We have gathered to convey, both to you and others, that we are displeased.

The president is taking decisive action regarding this matter. He is clearly displeased as well. The Inspector General has become actively involved. The Deputy Inspector General of the Criminal Investigation Department is now overseeing the situation. Up until now, they have apprehended fourteen individuals suspected of involvement.

“So these individuals will be taken to Abuja for questioning. Additionally, we’ve established a committee to ensure proper support for the families of those who passed away,” the governor stated according to reports.

In response, the Deputy President of the Senate stated that those responsible for this action must face justice to set an example for potential offenders.

We can’t reverse what has happened. However, every Nigerian shares the desire for ensuring that these individuals are apprehended and held accountable. You’re making progress toward this aim, which is commendable. Additionally, I appreciate your acknowledgment that your administration stands ready to support the families impacted by these events.

I would like you to keep pursuing this case so that everyone who was part of these horrendous acts faces justice. The situation is truly atrocious when stating the facts.

If these individuals face justice, it could discourage others from committing similar acts in the future. It’s known that people from various regions across the nation have lived among your community in Edo for many years in harmony. Such savage behavior has never occurred before, and I am confident that during your leadership, it won’t happen again.

“I am deeply grateful. You’ve informed me that you will be meeting with the Governor of Kano State today, which is excellent news. Please keep up your efforts. The President has assured us that you are performing exceptionally well in this regard, and we can see it for ourselves since, as mentioned, we have discussed this matter multiple times over the past 72 hours,” he stated.
