Elena Lasconi, the presidential candidate and head of the pro-reform Save Romania Union (USR) opposition party, stated that it would be highly beneficial for the government to close down TikTok prior to the upcoming presidential elections in May.
During her visit to Slatina, which is located in southern Romania, Lasconi expressed these views. She also mentioned that the widely used Chinese social network would be temporarily shut down to avoid external interference.
“If we cannot get such assurances from them, I think it would be wise to close it for at least one or two weeks prior to the presidential elections and then restart operations,” Lasconi stated to reporters.
The contender who secured the second position in the
canceled presidential elections scheduled for 2024
, barely edging out Social Democratic Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, stated that “incompetence” has led Romania to a critical juncture where shutting down TikTok would be necessary.
“I am an advocate for free speech and democratic principles, however, considering the potential risks posed by both governmental and non-governmental interference, which has been brought to our attention, I think we can proceed with making this decision,” stated Elena Lasconi during a press briefing, according to reports.

.
Lasconi additionally mentioned that false information spreads unchecked on TikTok, and he pointed out that the nine government bodies responsible for safeguarding the digital space are not fulfilling their duties effectively.
“We have specific proposals, such as a legislative initiative presented to Parliament, which mandates that false information must be removed within a maximum of 15 minutes, and content with potential manipulation should not reach more than 150 individuals. Although there is a proposed bill, I notice that it remains untouched in a drawer,” she said.
Other political leaders in Romania have repeatedly rejected banning the popular social media platform, which has amassed around 9 million users in Romania, roughly 47% of the population. Experts say Romania is especially vulnerable to fake news, as it has the lowest digital literacy skills in the EU, at around 1 in 2, compared to the Union average of 71%.

Former Governor Kawira Mwangaza of Meru has sharply criticized President William Ruto and his supporters.
-
She alleged that Meru officials supporting Ruto were focusing more on her removal from office rather than delivering services.
-
Mwangasa mockingly proposed that the leaders of Meru should ask the president to initiate her own impeachment proceedings, presenting it as their sole accomplishment.
The LIFEHACK.co.ke correspondent Ivan Mboto boasts more than three years of expertise in covering political and contemporary issues within Kenya.
The former governor of Meru, Kawira Mwangaza, has launched a scathing critique against President William Ruto and his political associates, with particular focus on individuals hailing from Meru County.

Mwangaza issued a sharply-worded statement accusing the area’s chosen officials of neglecting their duties as outlined in the constitution and instead focusing on removing her from power.
She mourned that for more than two and a half years, their main concern had been her impeachment, leaving crucial developmental issues impacting locals unresolved.
On her official Facebook page, Mwangaza didn’t mince words as she accused the region’s entire leadership of being involved in an unrelenting effort to remove her from office.
According to her, the combined effort of all these leaders had yielded only one tangible result: her impeachment.
“I specifically highlight that the 11 Members of Parliament, along with a Senator, present and past Cabinet Secretaries, Permanent Secretaries, and 47 Members of County Assembly, working together for two and a half years, have managed to accomplish just one initiative—the impeachment process of Governor Kawira Mwangaza,” she stated.
Her comment seemed to directly address Ruto’s forthcoming development visit to the Mount Kenya area, encompassing Meru County.
With a touch of sarcasm aimed at the county’s leaders, she quipped that the sole achievement they felt confident enough to offer the president for inauguration was her impeachment.
“As we anticipate President Ruto’s developmental visit to the Mount Kenya region, specifically Meru County, the sole initiative that leaders can confidently showcase for his inauguration and endorsement is my impeachment process,” she stated additionally.
What were the reasons for Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment?
Following her impeachment, Mwangaza commented on the persistent deep political divides that have existed in Meru County since she took office.
During her term, she frequently clashed with the County Assembly, resulting in two impeachment efforts; the second attempt was successful in removing her from office.
During her tenure in office, she consistently claimed that she was a target of a political witch hunt, frequently accusing prominent individuals of engineering her demise.
After a majority of members in the County Assembly sided with her impeachment, Mwangaza was ousted from office. Among the 69 Members of County Assembly, 49 backed the motion, 17 were against it, and three chose not to vote.
She faced allegations of abusing her position, engaging in serious misconduct, and breaching the Constitution along with other statutes. This motion, proposed by Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya, represented the fifth bid to remove her from office and stood as the third time a governor had been successfully impeached within the county’s timeline.

Mwangaza claims Ruto was involved in her dismissal.
Previously, Kawira Mwangaza asserted that the Kenya Kwanza administration was involved in her dismissal, describing it as politically driven. She alleged that her ousting was masterminded by male adversaries and high-ranking politicians who were retaliating against her refusal to submit to political exploitation.
She claimed that the administration meddled with the judicial proceedings, making sure that the concerns of Meru inhabitants were disregarded. Mwangaza stated that even the judiciary was swayed to impede her from obtaining justice.
Pointing to the swearing-in of her former deputy, Isaac Mutuma, she claimed those behind her ouster were present. She also suggested gender bias played a role in her removal.

A judge aiming to take over as the head of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has told the selection committee that he would step down from his present role if chosen for the new position.
Abdulqadir Lorot informed the IEBC selection committee that there is a precedent for state officials stepping down from their roles after being confirmed for a new public position.
“There is a previous example that has been established. If confirmed as the IEBC chairman, I am prepared to resign right away,” Lorot declared, emphasizing that there is no novelty in state officials undergoing interviews for public positions.
He stressed that when applying for the role, he was fully aware that accepting the position would necessitate his resignation from his current post as a magistrate should he be selected as the upcoming IEBC chairman.
The legislation disallows the IEBC chairperson from occupying another position as a state official prior to taking up their role.
“It has occurred previously, where state officials have been named as Cabinet Secretaries, like in the instance of the ex-Ugunja MP,” Lorot mentioned additionally.
Currently, Lorot holds the position of Chief Magistrate at the Naivasha Law Courts and has accumulated 23 years of experience within the judiciary, which includes serving as a judicial trainer.
When questioned regarding the number of constituencies in Kiambu County, Lorot could only remember eight out of the total twelve.
He listed Githunguri, Kiambaa, Lari, Kikuyu, Thika Town, Ruiru, Gatundu North, and Gatundu South but did not include Kabete, Limuru, Kiambu, and Juja constituencies.
The inquiry, designed to assess his knowledge of the nation’s voting districts, was presented by panelist Dr. Adams Oloo.
The committee headed by Dr. Nelson Makanda is presently interviewing 11 candidates who have been shortlisted for the role of IEBC chairperson.
The chosen individual will take over from the recently deceased Wafula Chebukati, who died last month following the conclusion of his six-year tenure in 2023.
The interviews are currently taking place at the College of Insurance in South C, Nairobi.

New Delhi [India], March 24 (ANI):
congress
-mp”>Congress MP
Shashi Tharoor
criticized the governing body on Monday for interrupting
Parliament
and stated that the concern brought up by the government is “irrelevant” since it falls under state jurisdiction.
It is incredibly surprising when you observe that the governing party, which fundamentally acts as the government responsible for managing parliamentary affairs, has opted to obstruct proceedings.
Parliament
In this manner, it is profoundly disheartening. In my opinion, the matter they’ve brought up is not pertinent since it falls under state jurisdiction… It is unrelated to central matters.
Parliament
“Why are they attempting to disturb the House over that issue?” Tharoor said to ANI.
“Honestly, we are reducing
Parliament
Into a farce. If we fail to operate effectively, why would voters wish to hand over their valuable taxes to support an organization that was once revered as the sanctuary of democracy? Should our debates descend into yelling contests rather than respectful discussions, it truly would be disheartening,” he remarked.
A commotion broke out within a few minutes of the session starting in the Rajya Sabha.
Karnataka
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s comments suggesting potential alterations to the Constitution have been noted.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju asked the Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, to explain the Congress party’s stance on reservations for Muslims. In response, the head of the Congress stated that no one has the power to amend the Constitution.
In the Rajya Sabha, Kiren Rijiju referred to Shivakumar’s comments as “highly serious.”
“We do not aim to disturb this critical moment during which I stand before you due to an exceptionally delicate issue brought to light. A highly esteemed leader within the Congress party, occupying a constitutional role, has declared their intent to amend the Constitution so as to introduce quotas for the Muslim community. This declaration cannot be taken frivolously; it represents a profoundly grave concern that we find unacceptable, constituting effectively an attack upon the Indian Constitution itself. Therefore, I seek a definitive response from the President of the Congress Party (Mallikarjun Kharge), present in this assembly. He must clarify his stance and explain both to Parliament and the citizens of India why the Congress wishes to alter the Constitution with provisions aimed at providing reservations for Muslims.” Said Rijiju.
In response to Kiren Rijiju, Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the Opposition (LoP) and head of the Congress party, stated that their party initiated the Bharat Jodo Yatra nationwide with the aim of safeguarding the Constitution.
“No one can amend the Constitution framed by Babasaheb Ambedkar. No one can abolish reservations either. We undertook the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kashmir to Kanyakumari to safeguard these provisions. It’s them (indicating towards NDA MPs) who are damaging our country,” stated Kharge.
Kiren Rijiju further replied to Kharge and demanded the resignation of
Karnataka
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
“By bringing up the topic of Muslim reservations, Congress has tarnished the reputation of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Constitution. If you possess courage, call for the deputy chief minister’s resignation right away,” Rijiju stated.
JP Nadda, the Leader of the House, mentioned that the Constitution clearly states reservations should not be granted on the basis of religion.
The Congress Party’s decision to introduce caste-based reservations according to religious lines goes against the fundamental principles set forth by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in the Constitution.
Karnataka
The Congress has already implemented a 4% reservation quota based on religion for public contracts. These types of laws and policies ought to be repealed. Nobody can amend the Constitution, which was developed under the guidance of B.R. Ambedkar,” said Nadda.
Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar suspended the session until 2 pm due to an outcry over the proposed 4 percent reservation for minority groups.
