The 49-story Sathorn Unique Tower, an abandoned structure in Bangkok, Thailand, gained widespread attention online when it surprisingly withstood a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, which rattled much of Southeast Asia.
The most powerful earthquake Myanmar had experienced in a century hit on March 28, causing vibrations felt all the way in Bangkok, which was approximately 1,000 kilometers away from the epicenter. This seismic event led to the collapse of an unfinished high-rise structure and jolted numerous buildings across the city.
Nonetheless, the Sathorn Unique Tower, situated in Bangkok’s Sathon District and deserted for over three decades, continued to stand tall, baffling numerous people.
Many people on social media posted pictures of the edifice, raising doubts about how this derelict construction managed to survive the intense seismic event.

Initially envisioned in the 1990s as an upscale mixed-use development, the building was intended to stand at 49 stories tall with spectacular vistas of the Chao Phraya River. Nonetheless, when construction reached approximately half-way point, the Asian financial crisis struck in 1997, severely impacting Thailand’s economy.

After inaugurating welfare initiatives valued at several crore rupees throughout the state via social media, Chief Minister Biswa stated, “Following visits to four districts—Nagaon, Biswanath, Sonitpur, and Jorhat—I’m returning to Guwahati. The total value of these committed welfare efforts exceeds Rs356 crore.”
These features encompass a new walkway, library, convention center, circuit house, school, hostel, automated vehicle testing centers, and bridges. Bit by bit, we shall construct a new and Viskit Assam,” stated CM Biswa.
On Monday, Sarma launched multiple initiatives and initiated groundwork for future projects in Biswanath during his three-day tour of the Biswanath and Sonitpur districts.
In these efforts, he launched a state-of-the-art automated vehicle inspection facility, established with an investment of Rs 11.50 crore, marking the region’s first such center in Southeast Asia.
The facility, which can examine as many as 300 vehicles daily, will cater to the districts of Biswanath, Lakhimpur, and Sonitpur.
After his swearing-in ceremony, he held a gathering with representatives from the Transportation Authority and the entity overseeing the premises, during which they gave a briefing about the protocols for examining vehicular condition.
Later, CM Sarma carried out the Bhoomi Pujan ritual and initiated the construction of a cable car system linking Biswanath Ghat to Umatumoni River Island. This venture, projected to cost Rs 58.81 crores, will extend over 446 meters and have the capacity to transport 300 people each hour.
Besides improving transport, it is anticipated to draw tourists and pilgrims to the area. During the ceremony, he officially opened several initiatives, such as the Circuit House (costing Rs 12.98 crore), the Biswanath Zila Parishad office building (valued at Rs 4 crore), the Tribal Rest House (priced at Rs 1 crore), and the residence for the Assistant Commissioner (worth Rs 91 lakh).

The cornerstone was placed together by Ghanshyam Bhandari, who serves as the Minister for Social Development under the Karnali Provincial Government; Avinash Kumar Singh, a Counsellor at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu; and Bharat Prasad Rijal, the Mayor of Dullu Municipality in Dailekh.

Since 2003, the Government of India has taken up over 563 HICDPs in Nepal in various sectors and has completed 495 projects. Amongst these, 15 projects are in Karnali Province, according to the Indian Embassy in Nepal press release. In addition to these, the Government of India has gifted 1009 ambulances and 300 school buses to various hospitals, health posts and educational institutions in Nepal. Amongst these, 50 ambulances and 8 school buses have been gifted in Karnali province, according to the press release.
The release further said, “As close neighbours, India and Nepal are engaged in wide-ranging and multi-sectoral cooperation. The implementation of HICDPs reflects the continued support of the Government of India in bolstering the efforts of the Government of Nepal in the growth and development of its people by augmenting infrastructure in priority sectors.”

In the last two years, significant renovations have been carried out with emphasis on preserving the historical aspects of the mansion, as stated by the Timiș County Council. Future projects include paving the inner courtyards, establishing green spaces, and restoring both the marble entryway steps and the internal wooden staircases. Additionally, plans encompass setting up living quarters, equipping a state-of-the-art kitchen, and opening a café.
Local officials intend to incorporate the mansion into a county-wide touristic path featuring its mansions, castles, and various historical landmarks.
“The structure marks the beginning of a planned touristic route within the county, featuring estates, fortresses, as well as places of worship and historic landmarks. This initiative aims at drawing tourists not only to this county but also to the broader area known as Banat.
