During one of the most anticipated fixtures of the IPL season, the five-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will face off against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a Southern Derby at the Chepauk Stadium this Thursday. In their previous encounter, RCB eliminated CSK from contention based on net run rate and clinched a playoff berth following an impressive streak of six consecutive victories after starting the tournament with only one win in their initial eight games. The two sides have met 33 times before, with CSK leading significantly with 21 wins compared to RCB’s mere 11, plus one tie game. Notably, RCB has managed to secure victory just once when playing at Chepauk Stadium, way back during the very first edition of the IPL in 2008.

Virat boasts an impressive history versus CSK, scoring 1,053 runs across 33 games and 32 innings averaging 37.60 with a striking rate exceeding 126. He has accumulated nine half-centuries along with his peak performance standing at 90*. However, when playing specifically at Chepauk Stadium, Virat’s stats drop; he managed only 383 runs from 13 encounters at an average of merely 29.46, accompanied by a strike rate above 111. During this period, he notched up two fifty-plus scores with a high score reaching 58.

Before the game, Dinesh spoke about Virat, according to quotes from ESPNCricinfo. He highlighted Virat’s critical innings during the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa following an underwhelming tournament phase. Additionally, he mentioned Virat’s performance with 218 runs across five games in the recent ICC Champions Trophy, where India emerged victorious due to key contributions from Virat in vital encounters.

“He has performed well recently when facing spin bowlers, particularly in limited-overs matches. Therefore, I prefer not to delve deeply into statistics as my knowledge might be outdated. However, recalling the T20 World Cup final, he scored crucial runs at an important time. Additionally, during the Champions Trophy, he excelled with the second-highest number of runs for India. Such achievements wouldn’t have been possible without handling spin effectively,” explained Dinesh.

“I think currently, he’s performing better than he ever has. Just before coming here, when we spoke, he expressed a desire to practice one additional shot. The fact that he still seeks to refine another aspect of his game indicates how hungry and determined he remains mentally. His constant drive for improvement keeps elevating his standards. Therefore, he stands out as an exceptional talent. Right now, based on my observations, he hasn’t been more assured with his bat throughout his entire IPL career,” he stated conclusively.

In the 2024 IPL, Virat took control of the match when facing spin bowlers, particularly during the middle overs, effectively using the slog sweep as his primary weapon.

During 13 overs, Virat accumulated 292 runs off 213 spins with a significantly better strike rate of 137.08, averaging 58.50 per inning, having been out five times. Out of his 38 hits for four or more runs, he managed 17 fours and 15 maximums against spin bowling.

This marked a significant enhancement in his performance against spin bowlers. In IPL 2023, he scored at a rate slightly above 113, hitting 17 boundaries and four sixes. However, during the 2022 season, he struggled against spin, managing a strike rate of 108 and only scoring five sixes.

Virat continued his newfound assurance against spin during the initial match against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata, demonstrating clever play against Sunil Narine and in-form Varun Chakravarthy.

Ahmedabad (Gujarat), India – On March 24, ANI reported that Brad Haddin, who serves as an assistant coach for Punjab Kings, disclosed that the team is currently assessing various possibilities regarding their opening duo before they kick off their Indian Premier League campaign.

PBKS plans to start its Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season with their opening game against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 25. With the players taking the field, anticipation amongst supporters is intense, and hopes are soaring for an impressive tournament this year.

With Ricky Ponting as mentor and Shreyas Iyer at the helm, Punjab Kings aim to make a significant impact this season. Before their opening game, assistant coach Brad Hadden spoke to the media, offering glimpses of how the squad has been preparing.

“The main emphasis for us since arriving has been preparing our players for the upcoming season. Our time in Dharamsala was productive; we gained valuable insights into many of our Indian players. Their potential excites us greatly—these athletes will undoubtedly form a courageous cricket squad,” Haddin stated at a pre-match press briefing in March.

Given the fast bowling prowess of speedsters Kagiso Rabada and Mohammad Siraj at the forefront of the Titans’ assault, Haddin commented on the Kings’ opening pair during their inaugural game of the season.

“We are not sure who opens yet. We have got guys like Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis who have done it well in the past as well. So we have to make sure that we get the right combination.”

He mentioned that the squad includes players for all required positions.

“We aim to ensure that they exhibit courageous cricket and perform according to the circumstances presented before them. This is an entirely new team. We have acquired players for each required role who possess the ability to adjust their gameplay across various positions. In my opinion, we boast extensive experience throughout our lineup,” stated Haddin.

The Punjab Kings’ assistant coach commended the squad’s camaraderie, attributing it to their leader, Captain Shreyas Iyer.

“The culture stems largely from our leadership. Our highly motivated captain, Shreyas Iyer, has achieved significant success in this particular form of cricket. His ability to unite the team has been crucial. Both the coaching staff and players share similar goals and mindsets.
