A Palestinian who won an Academy Award has been arrested in the occupied West Bank after clashes erupted between Israeli settlers and Palestinians, according to activists.
Hamdan Ballal, one of the four co-directors of No Other Land, found himself with his home encircled by settlers when an assault took place on Monday in the village of Susya. This information comes from five Jewish American activists.
Co-director Yuval Abraham stated that Mr. Ballal was assaulted and seized by soldiers while he was inside an ambulance, though this account has been challenged by Israeli authorities.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that three Palestinians and one Israeli were apprehended for allegedly throwing rocks at security personnel without specifically mentioning Mr. Ballal.
The five Jewish-American activists stated that roughly a dozen masked settlers launched an assault in Susiya around 18:00 (16:00 GMT).
The activists stated that they visited the village to record the event but were assaulted instead. Settlers broke their car windows and attacked them physically by punching, hitting them with sticks, and using violence against them.
It is said that Mr. Ballal’s residence was encircled by the settlers.
Yuval Abraham, the Israeli director who recently received an Oscar along with Mr. Ballal, mentioned that several individuals were harmed and multiple properties damaged during the assault.
An activist informed LIFEHACK that they had reported to the Israeli soldiers that they were being attacked. According to them, the army responded and the settlers withdrew.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their troops along with Israeli police forces were dispatched to calm down the situation.
It was reported that stones had been “thrown” at law enforcement officers.
The IDF stated that in reaction, the forces detained three Palestinians accused of throwing stones at them, along with an Israeli civilian who was part of the violent clash.
The prisoners were transferred for additional interrogation by the Israel Police. A local citizen sustained injuries during the event and was transported to obtain medical care.
No Other Land –
which won the award for Best Documentary at the 97th Academy Awards
– tracks the conflict surrounding Masafer Yatta, comprising roughly 20 villages, and explores the bond between Adra and Abraham.
Since 1967, Israel has been occupying the West Bank. The settlements established by Israelis in these territories are regarded as unlawful according to international law; however, Israel does not agree with this view.
Over the last 55 years, they have grown significantly, emerging as a key site for conflict and competing assertions about territory.
Following the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in 2023, attacks on Palestinian citizens in the West Bank by settlers have increased dramatically.

On Sunday, anti-war demonstrators assembled at the US consulate in Admiralty to urge Washington to cease obstructing the pro-Palestinian movement during Israel’s U.S.-backed conflict in Gaza.
The organization — HK Anti-war Mobilization — informed HKFP on Sunday that the consulate contacted the police, who then proceeded to search and identify the five activists, cautioning them against potential violations of the national security law.
“Last week, Israel dismantled the ceasefire agreement by initially halting hostage exchanges, followed by cutting off water and power supplies to Gaza. They resumed bombing raids overnight on Tuesday (the 18th), resulting in the brutal deaths of 404 individuals,” stated the organization.
We gather here today to voice our solidarity with the liberation of Palestine and to show support for anti-war advocates around the globe who are facing violence, suppression, and censorship.

Gaza’s Health Ministry
said
last week that over 50,000 people had been killed in the Palestinian territory since the latest conflict began in early October 2023. However, The Lancet medical journal has
said
The real number of deaths could be as much as 41 percent greater. A UN report states that most of the confirmed victims were females and kids.
The latest conflict
started
On October 7, 2023, Hamas militants initiated an unexpected assault on Israel, resulting in at least 1,139 fatalities and approximately 250 individuals being taken hostage to Gaza. As a response, Israel declared its intention to dismantle Hamas completely and subsequently conducted extensive bombing raids across the Gaza Strip lasting over one year.
On last Tuesday, the ceasefire that had been effective since January 19 came to an end when Israel launched a new attack on Gaza. The country has called for the liberation of numerous hostages who remain within the conflict-ravaged area.
Outside the U.S. Consulate on Sunday, the protesters carried signs reading: “The West is complicit in Israel’s genocide” and “Scare fascists.”
The declaration continued: “Led by the United States, Western governments have turned a deaf ear to their own people’s concerns and have aided in the genocide of Palestinians, thereby supporting Israel’s racist and colonial objectives.”
Police search
The organization stated they weren’t shocked that law enforcement was summoned on Sunday. They added, “The U.S. administration is curtailing the pro-Palestinian activism as the U.S. backs Israel in carrying out the extermination of Palestinians.”
They said that the police “reminded us not to violate the national security law, not to contain any sedition content in our slogans, and not to cover our face under [the] face-covering regulation,” as they searched and took down the identity card details of the activists.
In response, the US consulate told HKFP on Monday that the five were blocking their driveway and it had to ensure the safety of its staff and facilities.
The demonstrators were positioned at the entrance to the consulate’s vehicle gate, presenting a potential hazard to both their own safety and that of the consulate personnel,” the statement read. “We completely endorse the right of individuals to demonstrate in a peaceful and secure manner. It is not uncommon for protests to take place close to the consulate.
A year ago, US Consul General Gregory May
said
He posted on Facebook that he backed the rights of demonstrators outside the embassy.
“We uphold basic liberties and human rights. Although I politely differ from these guests’ opinions, I completely endorse their right to demonstrate peaceably,” he stated.
On Monday, the police responded via email stating that they had “received a report around 2 pm on March 23 regarding five individuals holding a public gathering outside 26 Garden Road, Central.” When the police arrived, those present were advised to make sure their public event was carried out according to legal requirements.
Mahmoud Khalil detention
The five protesters were additionally urging for the release of student activist Mahmoud Khalil from U.S. custody.
Khalil, who is a long-term resident of the U.S. and serves as the chief mediator for Columbia University’s student protest advocating for Palestine, was arrested by U.S. immigration authorities on March 8 following directives from the State Department to cancel his visa.
“The arbitrary imprisonment of Khalil demonstrated that the U.S. does not concern itself with justice and liberty whatsoever,” stated HK Anti-war Mobilization.
“The U.S. government is intensifying efforts against the pro-Palestinian movement across all areas, as they worry that people might reveal the reality of the genocide,” the organization added.
“Ironically, the legislation used to arrest Khalil was the same one used by the US government in the 1950s to block Holocaust survivors in Eastern Europe from entering the US,” the protest group said.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of penalties for students whom he alleges back Hamas or propagate anti-Jewish sentiment. However, detractors argue that Khalil’s detainment represents an unjust assault on freedom of expression.
Last year, the International Court of Justice — which serves as the main judicial organ of the United Nations — determined that Israel’s actions in Gaza might constitute genocide. However, Israel has refuted these allegations.
Last November, the UN-supported International Criminal Court announced arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Chief Yoav Gallant, along with a previous Hamas military leader, on charges related to alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In the meantime, authorities report that Egypt has presented a fresh plan aimed at reviving the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
An Egyptian official stated on Monday that Hamas has agreed to free five live captives, one of whom is both American and Israeli, in exchange for Israel permitting humanitarian assistance into the Gaza Strip and halting hostilities for several weeks. Additionally, Israel will let loose numerous Palestinian detainees.
A representative from Hamas stated that the organization had “shown positive sentiment” towards the proposal but did not provide further details. The officials who shared this information insisted on remaining anonymous as they were not permitted to address the press regarding these private discussions.
Thousands are trapped in Rafah in southern Gaza as Israeli forces encircle part of it
Many individuals are stuck in the city of Rafah within the southern Gaza Strip as Israeli forces have surrounded a section of it since Sunday, according to statements made by Palestinian authorities.
Israel instructed the residents of the Tel al-Sultan district to evacuate, directing them to depart via a specific path on foot towards Muwasi, which consists of extensive clusters of tents along the shoreline.
Many people escaped, however locals stated that numerous individuals were encircled by Israeli forces.
The Rafah municipality stated on Monday that thousands remained stranded, including emergency personnel from the Civil Defense, part of the Hamas-led administration, as well as members of the Palestinian Red Crescent.
The Israeli Defense Minister states they are making efforts to prevent civilian casualties.
Israel’s defense minister stated that they are attempting to prevent civilian casualties while targeting Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip.
Israel Katz made his remarks almost a week following Israel terminated its truce with Hamas, subsequently initiating an unexpected series of attacks that resulted in hundreds of Palestinian casualties, primarily comprising women and children, as reported by local healthcare providers.
Katz stated on Monday that “Israel is not engaged in combat with civilians in Gaza and is taking all measures required by international law to minimize harm to non-combatants.”
He proceeded to hold Hamas responsible for all civilian casualties, stating that the militant organization “operates while dressed as civilians, within residential areas, and using non-combatants as shields,” thus placing those individuals at risk.
He stated that Israel will continue its military operation until Hamas frees all captives and ceases to have authority over Gaza or pose a danger to Israel.
Israeli attacks throughout Gaza result in at least 25 Palestinian deaths.
At least 25 Palestinians, including multiple women and children, have been killed by Israeli attacks throughout the Gaza Strip, as reported by three hospitals. These airstrikes occurred almost a week following Israel’s termination of their truce with Hamas, which was initiated by an unexpected assault killing hundreds.
The Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City received 11 corpses early Monday morning following attacks throughout the night. Among those were three females and four minors. In one particular attack, two siblings lost both parents, their grandmother, and an uncle.
The Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, located in the south, admitted seven corpses from raids that occurred during the night and four more from attacks the day before. Meanwhile, the European Hospital took in three victims from an assault close to Khan Younis.
The Gaza Health Ministry announced on Sunday that the number of Palestinians killed during the 17-month conflict had exceeded 50,000. The ministry has stated previously that over half of those who died were women and children, though they do not differentiate between civilian and military casualties in their tally.
Israel claims it has eliminated approximately 20,000 fighters, though it hasn’t offered proof. The militant group led by Hamas reportedly took about 1,200 lives, mostly of civilians, and seized 251 individuals during their assault on October 7, 2023, which sparked the conflict.
A U.S. surgeon in Gaza reports that the majority of patients injured during an Israeli assault on a hospital were initially harmed in previous attacks.
A U.S.-based trauma surgeon operating in Gaza reports that many of the individuals hurt during an Israeli assault on the biggest hospital in southern Gaza were originally injured when Israel restarted its air strikes earlier last week.
Feroze Sidhwa, a Californian surgeon associated with the humanitarian organization MedGlobal, mentioned on Monday that he was present in the ICU of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis when an air strike struck the hospital’s surgical units on Sunday.
He stated that most of those who were hurt had been healing from injuries sustained during last week’s airstrikes before Israel restarted the conflict.
“They were already trauma patients, and now they’ve experienced a secondary trauma,” said Sidhwa, who grew up in Flint, Mich., during an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Sidhwa mentioned that he had performed surgery on a father and son just days prior to the attack, and they both did not survive.
