Segways Are Folding Up on Riders: Recall Alert in Malaysia

Segways Are Folding Up on Riders: Recall Alert in Malaysia

That’s likely the final thing you’d desire for your e-scooter to do.

E-mobility
Has seized control of the globe, and if you reside in an urban area, you’ve likely witnessed—or narrowly avoided being hit by—an electric scooter at least once. These vehicles are ubiquitous, and rightly so. They’re inexpensive to operate, simple to park, and transform brief journeys into effortless trips.

One of the major contenders in the competition is
Segway-Ninebot
, a firm that produces millions of electric scooters annually. Here’s an interesting tidbit: Ninebot is supported by the massive Chinese technology corporation Xiaomi, which also happens to be renowned for manufacturing smartphones, intelligent home devices, and virtually all types of technological products imaginable.

Now, when you’re producing e-scooters at this enormous scale, inevitably, issues will arise from time to time. When they do occur, they become significant matters. To illustrate, Segway recently issued a recall.
220,000 Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP Scooters
in the US because of a folding mechanism that can fail mid-ride. That’s right—your handlebars could suddenly decide they’ve had enough and fold like a cheap lawn chair while you’re cruising along.

It sounds enjoyable, doesn’t it? Nope? Exactly.

Segway has received 68 complaints about this issue, resulting in 20 reported injuries varying from minor cuts and bruises to fractures. In severe cases, individuals may require unexpected dental procedures. These problematic scooters were distributed through major stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, Costco, Target, and Sam’s Club, along with online platforms including Segway and Amazon, during the period from January 2020 to February 2025. They had price tags ranging from $600 to $1,000.

If you have one of these scooters, consider this advice—cease using it right away. Segway is providing a complimentary maintenance kit that comes with tools and guidelines for inspecting and securing the folding mechanism to prevent it from becoming an unexpected ejection trigger. Considering the substantial number of these scooters sold globally, this problem may not be confined to just the United States. Therefore, if you possess one, it would be wise to contact Segway and take precautions to avoid potential regret.

In conclusion, electric mobility is great, but a scooter that chooses to self-destruct during a ride? Not ideal. Should you or anyone you know own one of these Segways, have it inspected, obtain the necessary repairs, and remain steady.

Don’t Let It Ignite: Expert Tips for Safe Home Charger Installation

Don’t Let It Ignite: Expert Tips for Safe Home Charger Installation

Tom Moloughney repairs a homeowner’s damaged plug and describes the issue that caused it.

It goes without saying that most electric vehicle charging happens
takes place at home
It is not a secret that
Not every Level 2 charger is made alike.
However, even though L2 installations are typically viewed as simple, they too can vary greatly. These enclosures handle significant electrical currents. Any deficiency could lead to severe outcomes.

To reinforce that idea, our colleague Tom Moloughney initiated a segment on his own.
State of Charge
The YouTube channel is named Recharge Rescue. Briefly put, they go to visit individuals who have issues with their residential charging stations. He elucidates the problem before bringing in an accredited electrician with expertise in electric vehicles to fix the situation.

His series began last year, however, the newest addition transports us to Ohio for a
Mustang Mach-E
owner with a damaged NEMA 14-50 receptacle.

The video kicks off with crucial information: not every outlet marketed as industrial-grade can handle prolonged high-power usage. Moloughney points out a Leviton 279-S00 plug, usually priced at about $10 and labeled as industrial quality. He contrasts this with a newer Leviton model made exclusively for electric vehicle charging. Significant distinctions emerge; the enhanced plug is noticeably bulkier, featuring additional internal metal components and superior terminal connections within its casing.

The cost discrepancy is significant—at $66 compared to $10. However, Moloughney points out that the elevated price is entirely justified due to the enhanced quality and functionality. To sum up, you invest more to receive more.

When visiting the Mach-E owner, we observed that the melted NEMA plug was actually a smaller, inferior model. Fortunately for them, a significant fire did not break out. The outlet had become sufficiently heated to permanently affix the charger’s plug. Moloughney provided a replacement charger and, working alongside a skilled electrician, they decided to eliminate the old outlet entirely in favor of direct hardwiring. Additionally, the breaker panel was upgraded to include a 50-amp breaker; it turned out that the earlier electrical work utilized a 60-amp breaker paired with 6-gauge Romex wire to supply power to what should have been a 50-amp outlet. To prevent overloading the circuit, the new charger was rated down to handle up to 40 amps.

The upgrade proceeds without issues, however, the key message from the video is to avoid cutting corners during your home setup. Typically, hardwiring is preferable; nonetheless, if you choose to use a plug, ensure it’s not only industrially rated but also designed to manage prolonged power needs for EV charging. Additionally, it’s most advisable to have a certified electrician who has expertise inEV installations carry out the work.

The Groundbreaking Instrument That Shaped Electronic Music Celebrates Its 60th Anniversary

The Groundbreaking Instrument That Shaped Electronic Music Celebrates Its 60th Anniversary

What?

The Moog Synthesizer was among the earliest examples of a modular voltage-controlled oscillator and amplifier system, developed by Robert Moog.

In layman’s terms?

Robert Moog’s synthesizers were pioneering in enabling individuals to generate and modify electronic music comprehensively. His initial model featured dual voltage-controlled oscillators along with a voltage-controlled amplifier. This primary oscillator permitted users to adjust the pitch of generated sounds via varying voltages; these voltages could subsequently be processed using the secondary oscillator to achieve effects such as tremolo.

Why is it in the news and why is it significant?

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first Moog synthesizer, it’s worth noting that electronic sound machines did exist prior to this innovation; however, they were massive, often occupying whole rooms. Inspired by the theremin—a touchless electronic instrument developed in the 1920s—Moog was driven to experiment with incorporating amplifiers into the synthesizers’ oscillators. This modification aimed to create a smaller, more transportable version of these groundbreaking devices.

Who had the means to purchase the initial Moog synthesizer?

In addition to being the first portable modular synthesizer, it was also the first relatively inexpensive one—well, somewhat. The initial Moog Synthesizer cost about $10,000 back in 1964. When adjusted for inflation, this amount equates to roughly $100,000 (or €90,000). While not exactly budget-friendly, it was considerably more affordable compared to the millions required in contemporary dollars for similar equipment from competitors at that time.

So who ended up purchasing it?

The initial client was British-American composer Eric Siday, who requested Moog to build one of these machines specifically for him and also asked for an additional keyboard component. Following this, various composers intrigued by the potential of experimental electronic music began commissioning more units from Moog and sought enhancements like filters, which led to innovative sound effects including what became known as the “wah-wah” effect.

Was the music of high quality?

As more

classical composers

Soon enough, people were drawn to Moog’s captivating synthesizers, leading to the creation of one of the earliest remarkable musical pieces. Among the initial trailblazers with the Moog Synthesizer was Paul Beaver, who collaborated with Mort Garson to produce the album ‘The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds.’ This work became a source of inspiration for many upcoming experimental artists. Later, in 1968, Wendy Carlos released the groundbreaking album ‘Switched-On Bach,’ earning both commercial success and critical praise by rearranging Bach’s works. The album claimed three Grammy Awards and became the first classical record to achieve platinum certification.

Any pop music?

The earliest notable application of the Moog Synthesizer likely originated with the rock band.

The Doors

– Particularly noteworthy is “Strange Days,” the title track from The Doors’ sophomore album released in 1967. Beaver utilized his synthesizer skills alongside Jim Morrison’s distinctive vocals to craft an unsettling sonic backdrop for the song. Shortly thereafter, the Moog synthesizer gained popularity among various artists; most notably, The Beatles featured it on their album “Abbey Road.” Early enthusiasts also included bands such as The Monkees, The Grateful Dead, and The Rolling Stones, along with jazz performers like Herbie Hancock and Sun Ra.

Is Moog still the only type of synthesizer around?

Today, electronic music is everywhere, with synthesizers made by countless manufacturers and replicated via digital audio workstation software. However, this did not lead Moog to rest on his accomplishments.

What were Moog’s subsequent actions?

In 1970, Moog introduced the Minimoog, an even more compact iteration of their initial synthesizer model which quickly became popular. Despite expecting sales of about 100 units primarily among professional studio musicians, this innovative instrument saw massive success with tens of thousands being sold throughout multiple decades. It also set the stage for subsequent models like the Vocoder, Micromoog, Multimoog, and Polymoog, propelling Moog into widespread recognition within the musical community. The company gained significant prominence through appearances on numerous progressive rock records from bands such as Yes, Tangerine Dream, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Arguably one of its most notable achievements during that era came via Donna Summer’s track ‘I Feel Love,’ nearly wholly crafted using the Moog synthesizer.

What happened to Moog?

In the early ’80s, as increased competition emerged against Moog’s synthesizers, his business faced significant challenges. The digital synthesis technology offered by firms such as Yamaha proved overwhelming for Moog, leading to the company filing for bankruptcy in 1987. However, by 2002, there was a resurgence of appreciation for Moog’s iconic instruments, prompting him to reintroduce an updated lineup of synthesizers. Despite passing away in 2005 at the age of 71, the enterprise he founded has continued producing synths, including recent additions like the Spectravox, Labyrinth, and Muse models launched this year.
