In the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2025, universities across Asia, notably those located in Singapore, mainland China, and Hong Kong, have shown significant progress with an impressive rise in their number of subjects placed within the top 50 categories.
The rankings evaluate more than 18,300 programs at 1,700 universities spanning 100 nations, underscoring the escalating worldwide rivalry in tertiary education.
American educational institutions remain at the forefront, topping the rankings in 32 fields, with Harvard claiming the number one spot in 15 areas and MIT leading in 11 disciplines.
British universities stand out in 18 disciplines, with Cambridge topping the charts in four areas. According to QS, a UK-based higher education data company, the University of Leeds has the most subject listings at 53 across all U.K. educational bodies.
The United Kingdom experienced a general improvement in its subject rankings, with 1,831 submissions from 104 institutions this year, compared to 1,797 last year.
Asia’s rapid rise
Asian universities have surpassed those in the U.K. in terms of enhancements in subject rankings.
Specifically, Mainland China has significantly increased its representation among the top 50 institutions, rising from 100 subjects in 2020 to 231 this year—a growth of 131%. Additionally, the count of Chinese universities within the top 10 positions has skyrocketed from five to twenty-one, marking an impressive rise of 320%.
Hong Kong showed significant progress as well, with its number of subjects in the top 10 list growing from two to six, and its count within the top 50 jumping from 76 to 108 positions, marking a rise of 42%.
Singapore has witnessed the most remarkable improvements, with its top 10 subject rankings jumping from eight to 34 — an increase of 325%.
The University of Hong Kong tops Asian institutions, placing within the top 200 across an impressive 55 disciplines—the largest number among regional universities. This year, it also showed the greatest progress with 47 subject rankings improving, closely trailed by The Chinese University of Hong Kong which had 43 advancements.

The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject encompass 55 disciplines distributed among five major academic areas: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management.
This year’s iteration stands out as the most comprehensive yet, featuring 171 additional educational institutions over the 2024 rankings. Fields including medicine, computer science & information systems, and materials science now boast a higher number of ranked universities than has previously been seen.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) chapter of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing member benefits and promoting a more conducive academic atmosphere.
On Monday, when addressing reporters in Awka, Professor Chigozie Damian Ezeonyejiaku, who leads the UNIZIK Chapter, mentioned that the recent appearance of CONUA at the institution is designed to provide an environment for scholars working in Nigeria’s public universities to flourish. He stressed that the organization aims to foster academic independence and safeguard the welfare of its members.
As he stated, “The organization began full operations at UNIZIK on March 12, 2025, and I had the good fortune to become the founding coordinator. You are aware that CONUA, similar to other allied associations within the institution, is officially recognized by the federal government to offer a forum for academic staff members in Nigerian universities.”
“The union gives top priority to the well-being of academics, maintaining a stable academic setting, and ensuring intellectual freedom,” he further stated.
Professor Ezeonyejiaku similarly urged the federal government to tackle the ongoing problem of brain drain in universities and emphasized the importance of allocating sufficient funds to the educational sector as a means to secure the country’s future.
He urged potential members to become part of CONUA and benefit from the various opportunities offered by the organization. These benefits extend beyond individual growth to include significant contributions toward enhancing higher education in Nigeria.

– The ESCET Alumni Association has expressed appreciation for Governor Peter Mbah’s efforts towards enhancing education within the state.
This recognition was bestowed by the president of the association, Mr. Mathew Divine Idoko, during a recent homecoming celebration conducted on the campus grounds.
At the event, which saw two students being granted scholarships for an academic year, Idoko voiced his robust backing of Mbah’s efforts, stating, “Mbah has performed admirably in elevating educational standards within the state.”
Governor Peter Mbah is performing exceptionally well in reshaping the education sector within the state. His dedication towards elevating the educational standards truly deserves praise. Were we to evaluate his significant advancements in education on a scale, he would undoubtedly receive a perfect score of 100%.
“And particularly at ESCET, where he has shown significant dedication to enhancing the well-being of both students and administration members. He has authorized the release of overdue wages to employees. As alumni, we applaud his efforts in reshaping education within Enugu State,” he stated.
To motivate the students to prioritize their education and achieve academic success, Idoko mentioned that rewarding them for correct answers serves this purpose.
He mentioned that the organization seeks to boost the number of recipients; however, the primary focus is to guarantee that each student at ESCET feels at ease both scholastically and personally.
We granted a financial aid scholarship to two underprivileged college students to promote their academic achievements. In the previous year, our outgoing graduates from ESCET organized a ‘welcome back’ event and extended an invitation to us.
Throughout the event, the alumni group decided it was important to motivate the students by posing straightforward questions aimed at assessing their cognitive skills. Both participants—a student from the degree program and another from the NCE program—responded accurately and were awarded scholarships for an entire academic year’s tuition fees, sponsored by the alumni organization.
“The objective was to foster academic brilliance amongst the students. By demonstrating that former pupils continue to return to the college, we aim to underscore our commitment to maintaining high standards. This initiative is designed to motivate current students to work diligently and treat their studies with utmost seriousness,” he stated.
As he seeks assistance from both governmental bodies and non-governmental organizations, Idoko mentioned that the Alumni Association is setting up an office within the institution. This initiative aims to oversee the interactions between students and administration, with the dual purpose of promoting academic excellence and enhancing student well-being.
He praised the administration and employees of the college for upholding the rigorous academic standards set from the beginning.
The National Secretary of the Association, Hyginus Odo, urged the students to stay dedicated to achieving their objectives regardless of any obstacles, emphasizing that “there is always hope even when things seem difficult.”
He likewise praised the administration and personnel at the college, particularly highlighting those who have excelled in maintaining high academic standards and supporting students’ well-being.
A third-year student from the Igbo Education program, Blessing Nnamchi, conveyed her happiness and gratitude towards the alumni association for their generous act. Surprised by the turn of events, she mentioned, “Initially, I planned only to observe what they were up to before returning to my hotel. However, upon arriving, a question was posed, and I managed to answer it correctly.”
“I’m extremely delighted with the scholarship awarded by the alumni association. It came as a surprise when I found out that I was selected alongside others who received scholarships. The moment I got the funds, I exclaimed ‘Wooo!’ and realized that I wouldn’t have to request financial support from my parents for tuition this term,” she stated.
