Despite receiving numerous negative reviews, Disney’s live-action adaptation of the timeless fairytale “Snow White” has claimed the top spot on the North American box office charts.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned approximately $87.3 million (£67.5 million) worldwide over its opening weekend. Nearly half of this amount was generated from North American ticket sales.

However, this falls short of expectations for a movie that supposedly had a budget exceeding $270 million.

The revamp of the 1937 full-length animated film appeared to be a guaranteed success until it encountered a string of controversies leading up to its launch.

The reboot of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs turned into a focal point for societal and political disagreements, even prior to its worldwide launch.

This involved some critique regarding the choice of Rachel Zegler, who has Colombian heritage, for the lead role.

  • Why the Disney reboot turned into the most controversial movie of 2025
  • Critics describe the Snow White film as both ‘poorly made’ and ‘mesmerizing.’

There was also significant criticism regarding Zegler’s support for Palestine and Gal Gadot’s supportive statements towards Israel, with Gadot portraying the role of Snow White’s stepmother, known as the Evil Queen.

There continues to be a discussion regarding whether dwarfs should have been included in the film, either as live actors or through CGI.

Rotten Tomatoes
Snow White holds a critics’ rating of only 44%, whereas the audience’s “Popcornometer” score is 73%.

The chief film critic at The Times, Kevin Maher, stated: “Don’t believe the hype; it’s really awful,” whereas the Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney described the movie as “largely engaging.”

Featuring eerie CGI dwarfs and an inconsistent tone, Disney’s most recent live-action adaptation isn’t “disastrous” but comes across as “a bewildering mix-up.”
