This year, Cape Town Airport outperformed Doha Hamad to claim the title of the top airport globally for passenger satisfaction, as per an annual survey conducted by AirHelp, a leading company in flight compensation worldwide.
The assessment ranked 250 global airports using three main factors: punctuality, passenger reviews, and the standard of dining and shopping facilities.
Last year, Doha Hamad was recognized as the top airport globally in the rankings; however, it dropped to second place due to an on-time performance rating of 8.2 out of 10, which is less than this year’s winner’s score of 8.6.
Doha Hamad received 9 points for the standard of cuisine and retail options, surpassing Cape Town which had 8.3 in this area.

China is entering the competition to lead a new era of supersonic air travel by planning to develop an airplane that could compete with the Concorde, as reported by local media outlets.
According to reports from the South China Morning Post, COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China) recently disclosed plans for the C949 – a supersonic aircraft capable of reaching speeds up to 1.6 Mach, which would allow it to travel faster and farther compared to the Concorde – as mentioned in an academic publication.
The document stated that the initiative aimed for a 50 percent increase in range compared to the Concorde and was engineered to ensure the aircraft operates as silently as a hair dryer’s noise level.
This will be achieved using a curved plate body designed to reduce shockwaves, thereby delaying intense sonic booms that might otherwise originate from the aircraft, as the SCMP report further explained.
Lowering the noise levels is an approach for the aircraft to attempt overcoming regulatory obstacles that prohibit supersonic travel, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
Euronews Next is attempting to independently confirm these assertions by contacting the academic journal that released the research along with COMAC; however, they have yet to receive any responses by the time of publishing.
Other supersonic aircraft currently under development
The Concorde, a supersonic aircraft developed jointly by France and the United Kingdom, conducted its initial test flight in 1969. Over its 26-year operational period, this iconic plane completed nearly 50,000 trips with British Airways as its operator.
The aircraft, capable of reaching a top cruise speed of Mach 2.04 (approximately 2,180 km/h), offered a journey time between London and New York under 3.5 hours compared to the standard 8-hour trip for a non-supersonic flight.
Since the retirement of Concorde in 2003, there haven’t been any civilian supersonic planes in operation. However, several new supersonic ventures are currently underway, such as the X-59 project, which is a collaboration between NASA and Lockheed Martin, based in the United States.
Disclosed last year, the airplane operates at an altitude of 55,000 feet (more than 16,700 meters) and generates noise comparable to that of a car door shutting, as stated by its creators.
The X-59 is engineered to reach velocities of Mach 1.4 (approximately 1,730 km/h), which is less swift compared to both the Concorde and the anticipated Chinese C949.
In March, NASA reported that the X-59 successfully completed an engine speed hold, also known as a cruise control test, which marks the final phase before its maiden flight scheduled for later this year.
Paul Dees, NASA’s deputy propulsion lead for the X-59 at the agency’s Armstrong Flight Research Center, stated, “We had to confirm that the speed control function was effective both inside the engine and as an integral part of the whole aircraft system.”
The test verified that all elements – including the software, mechanical connections, and control laws – function together as planned.
A private firm called Boom Supersonic aims to introduce its supersonic aircraft, known as the Overture, prior to the conclusion of this decade.
During the initial test flight of the XB-1 in January, the aircraft reached speeds of up to 1,207 kilometers per hour and climbed to an altitude exceeding 35,000 feet (10,600 meters). The company stated that the plane successfully landed without producing a sonic boom.
Commercial interest in the Overture has already emerged, with Boom having secured deals previously.

Uganda Airlines officials have led an initiative to clean up the lakeshore area near Lake Victoria in Kigungu, within the Entebbe Municipality, aiming to decrease incidents of birds colliding with aircraft.
As part of the carrier’s comprehensive flight path sustainability program, this effort seeks to reduce bird strikes at Entebbe International Airport by enhancing waste management practices and promoting environmental preservation.
The cleanup initiative, carried out in partnership with Kigungu residents and local community leaders, centered around gathering and disposing of waste responsibly, notably plastics and remnants from fish processing, which have significantly fueled avian presence in the region for years.
Historically, the buildup of waste along Lake Victoria’s shoreline has lured birds searching for nourishment, causing them to wander into airplane flight routes, which presents significant aviation safety hazards.
At the event, Shakilah Rahim Lamar, who leads Corporate Affairs and Public Relations at Uganda Airlines, highlighted the importance of this initiative.
“Seagulls are attracted to the refuse left along the shorelines, often resulting from fish processing operations. As Entebbe serves as a protected area for birds, it draws numerous avian visitors from nearby Mabamba Bay, thereby raising concerns about potential collisions with planes during ascent and descent phases. Such occurrences can result in significant delays and even cancelations due to damaged aircraft. This project seeks to encourage the local population in practicing eco-friendly disposal methods such as reusing, refurbishing, and recycling materials,” explained Shakilah.
She mentioned that the Flight Path Sustainability Project, initiated in November 2022, targets a 40% decrease in bird presence near the airport and encourages locally driven waste management strategies.
As stated by the Uganda Airlines representative, this initiative also fosters economic growth by converting waste into useful assets, thereby offering local inhabitants a chance to make a livelihood via recycling programs.
Uganda Airlines is committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The airline feels that engaging local communities and stakeholders in programs like the Kigungu cleanup can significantly boost aviation safety while simultaneously enhancing sanitation and public health in nearby regions.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has warned international carriers about the rising number of grievances from travelers who are flown partway to their destinations before being sent back to Nigeria.
The NCAA criticized the practice, highlighting that it has caused significant anguish among travelers and harmed the standing of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Michael Achimugu, who serves as the NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, made this announcement in a statement on Thursday.
“These actions, which involve the refusal of boarding or denial of entry at intermediate or transit stops due to visa and travel restrictions, are completely unacceptable,” he said.
The NCAA emphasized that airlines must notify passengers about any possible barriers to their entry prior to the start of their travel.
“Passengers must not find themselves in a situation where they are refused entry or sent back to Nigeria solely upon reaching transit points,” Achimugu emphasized.
According to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Section 19.21.1.1), the NCAA has emphasized that both airlines and their representatives must ensure passengers are made aware of any possible entry limitations prior to leaving for their destination.
“Airlines are required to implement suitable procedures for screening and should furnish passengers with precise, current details about their travel documents and visa prerequisites prior to selling tickets or permitting them to board,” he emphasized.
He mentioned that due to these problems, the NCAA has declared urgent compliance actions.
“Starting now, any airline caught participating in these practices will be subject to regulatory measures, which may include financial penalties, temporary suspensions of their flying privileges, or other suitable consequences,” Achimugu cautioned.
“The NCAA looks forward to the collaboration from all airlines in upholding the standards and professionalism within the aviation sector, along with safeguarding the welfare of Nigerian travelers,” he stated.
