Chelsea
have arranged an enticing confrontation with
Barcelona
in the Women’s
Champions League
semifinal, recovering from being down by two goals for an incredible comeback at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues entered Thursday evening’s final match of their four successive games one point ahead, after securing their victories.
League Cup
finally along with the league, coming between a 2-0 loss in the first leg of this quarter-final.

When Sonia Bompastor asserted that she ‘wasn’t bothered’ about ending her personal 28-match unbeaten run, little did anyone know how accurate that stance would turn out to be. Especially considering Chelsea’s loss in what ended up being an insignificant match overall, her perspective appears quite prescient.

‘I mentioned after the first leg that we still had a chance, and I believed it was feasible, although I understood the challenge would be difficult,’ she stated following Thursday evening’s victory.

But I believe it’s crucial for us to recover and get the chance to experience losing games so we can observe our team’s reaction. Personally, I feel that both my coaching staff and I invested significant effort as managers since the first leg to ensure that our strategy was sound.

‘Until you participate and achieve success, you won’t realize it.’

The match seemed poised to begin on fairly equal terms, though everyone knew that Bompastor would pull out all stops in an attempt to secure a spot in the semi-finals of Europe’s top tournament.

Ultimately, this was among the key factors behind bringing the three-time Champions League champion (winning twice as a player and once as a coach) to the team, due to their extensive expertise.

In the end, following tonight’s events, this choice appears to have been justified. At least for now, until they face an impressive-looking Barcelona team next, which scored 10 goals overall against Wolfsburg, only letting in two times.

The city team was left with minimal options due to limited squad availability, as Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Aoba Fujino remained sidelined. Additionally, long-term absences included England’s Lionesses players Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood.

On that particular evening, they carried along merely five substitute players – including only one offensive choice named Jess Park – which was exactly half the number of reserves that their adversaries had at disposal.

City manager Nick Cushing lamented the thinness of his roster following the match, stating: “Whenever you step onto the field for a UEFA Champions League quarter-final, you aim to have your top talents playing.”

‘To have players like Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp, along with a goalkeeper vying for the starting position, but not having our striker who has been involved in most of our goals scored this season—it’s challenging, isn’t it? However, I’m not trying to make excuses here.’

‘I was aware of the mission and the difficulty ahead when I stepped into this role. What I consistently expect from my squad is genuine resilience, tenacity, and confidence. You can observe these qualities in them. The team gave everything until the very last moment.’

Despite their 2-0 lead, City looked more nervous on the night and it took just under 15 minutes for Chelsea to find the opener.

Disappointed by this turn of events, Cushing watched as it resulted from a City throw-in. Lucy Bronze seized control, forcefully making her way into the penalty area and striking the ball with the outer part of her foot towards Khiara Keating’s goal, who was also one of her teammates for the Lionesses.

The ball rebounded with some ferocity off the post and Sandy Baltimore, unmarked and with plenty of time to think about it, sent it flying into the far-right corner.

Chelsea was denied a penalty as the referee dismissed Bompastor’s claim that Erin Cuthbert had been fouled inside the box.

However, the French coach didn’t have much time to worry from the touchline.

Baltimore struck once more, this time originating from the corner flag. Her set-piece allowed Nathalie Bjorn to rise above everyone else, jumping higher than anyone else to equalize in front of the ecstatic Shed End supporters.

From then on, the city started to decline.

After a frantic scramble resulted in Cushing signaling for composure from his squad following the ball being nervously regained by Hoof into Chelsea’s eager control, it seemed his instructions went unheeded as Mayra Ramirez extended their lead to three just prior to halftime when Chelsea capitalized yet again on an error during a set piece situation.

Cushing replaced Miedema – who found it difficult to assert herself during the first half – with a new role positioned further up front at halftime.

The acting head similarly enlisted Laura Coombs to strengthen the defense, and these additions appeared to create a more balanced team.

The city team had numerous opportunities during the second half, particularly when Miedema took a powerful shot from outside the penalty area that narrowly missed the post. However, for the most part, Chelsea appeared quite at ease with maintaining possession.

This season, Millie Bright and Bjorn have formed an impressive center-back duo, and they once more demonstrated their prowess in defending against Hannah Hampton.

Park replaced Jill Roord in the 65th minute and injected fresh vigor into City’s weary players, however, Bompastor’s team continued to push relentlessly.

Next up is the renowned Liga F powerhouse, Barcelona — a team against whom Chelsea has lost their last two semifinals consecutively.

But when there’s a will, there’s a way. And having the squad depth that Chelsea possesses certainly does its bit in helping, too.

The RFU CEO, Bill Sweeney, managed to pass through a no-confidence vote regarding his leadership during an extraordinary general meeting on Thursday evening.

The beleaguered leader has stayed resolute during the turmoil and will proceed with his duties.

The RFU members voted against the motion of no confidence in Sweeney with a count of 466 to 206.

A proposal stating ‘the Governance and Representation Review needs to be fast-tracked and must encompass official consultations with the broader gaming community’ was approved by an overwhelming margin.

Sir Bill Beaumont, the temporary Chairman of the RFU, stated: “Our members have spoken clearly.”

‘They have clearly shown their backing for our CEO, Bill Sweeney, with this strong vote, and I’m delighted to witness such an unequivocal result.’

‘I would also like to recognize the individuals who cast their votes in favor of the motion—thank you for sharing your voices and viewpoints. Each opinion holds significance, and your worries have been carefully noted.’

‘I request that you allow the RFU to show its dedication to advancement at this moment.’

‘It is now the moment for us to unite, reinforce our solidarity, and concentrate on what lies ahead. The era of discord has ended.’

‘It is now the time to come together for the chance to rejuvenate English rugby.’

‘The RFU aims to update their systems, and this presents an unparalleled chance to achieve just that.’

To conclude, let us unite and concentrate on our collective potential. We should strive to guarantee that the Rugby Football Union keeps thriving, evolving, and setting the pace in rugby.

Blues boss

has kept working at Cobham alongside others who also did not go abroad for international duties, including
Nicolas Jackson
, the forward who is anticipated to be fit enough to come back to Tottenham following a two-month absence from the pitch.

The numbers have increased as well due to young players being summoned from the academy to train with the main team. However, Mail Sport has discovered that Palmer hasn’t joined these training sessions just yet.

While it remains uncertain exactly when he will return, considering his significance as their primary playmaker, Chelsea might delay making any definitive decision about including him against Tottenham until absolutely necessary.

Initially, there was hope regarding Palmer’s condition, despite him being referred for a second scan at the beginning of the international break.

The past season has been challenging for this 22-year-old English player, who had participated in every other Premier League match for Chelsea prior to their visit to Arsenal.

Even though he wasn’t performing well, his absence had a considerable impact on that 1-0 loss.

Chelsea aims for a robust finish to secure their spot back in the Champions League. At present, they hold the fourth position on the leaderboard, and previously defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 at their stadium with a remarkable turnaround where Palmer netted two goals, highlighted by his composed Panenka-style penalty kick.

Fairy Tale Reunion: Wanyama Sees Hope for Dunfermline’s Rescue from Relegation

Fairy Tale Reunion: Wanyama Sees Hope for Dunfermline’s Rescue from Relegation

  • The former Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur player confesses he couldn’t resist answering his previous manager’s call for aid to assist in lifting Dundee United out of the Championship relegation zone.

  • The Kenyan player Wanyama is equally captivated by the ambitions displayed by the club’s ownership from Fife.

  • Now he is all set for an exciting debut against another ex-Celtic player as Pars go up against Scott Brown’s Ayr United at Somerset Park.

The possibility of an experienced player like
Victor Wanyama
Blending it with the intensity of the Scottish Championship would have once been unimaginable.

Ultimately, this is a midfielder who proved exceptionally effective during his prime years, and
Mauricio Pochettino
insisted on having him sign again, initially for
Southampton
and then for
Tottenham
.

And there he was at East End Park, talking about his comeback to Scottish football after being away for 12 years, calling it ‘a fairytale’ and an ‘easy decision’.

Mainly, of course, because he couldn’t ignore the distress signal from his ex-Parkhead manager Neil Lennon, who is now at Dunfermline, or the excitement of making his first appearance against Scott Brown’s Ayr United team.

Nevertheless, the 33-year-old Kenyan footballer emphasized that what really caught his attention was the vision of the new proprietors of Pars, who were determined to elevate the team from battling against relegation in the Championship to achieving much greater things.

One that could maybe see the club eventually return to the top flight Wanyama once graced with
Celtic
between 2011 and 2013.

James Bord from Las Vegas and Evan Soter recently acquired a controlling interest in Dunfermline, and Lennon has expressed excitement over the latter’s perspective on analytics as well as his future strategies for the team.

‘The manager has had a significant role in my career, and he requested that I come to assist him,’ disclosed Wanyama during his introduction.

‘I asked, “Why not?” Since he has been a significant figure in my career, I decided to go down and lend him a helping hand.’

“I also had a conversation with the owner. He has big aspirations. After hearing his goals and intentions for the team, it became clear right away. His enthusiasm for the sport is immense, and he aims to elevate the club to new heights.”

To start off, there’s an intense fight against relegation in this challenging and unforgiving atmosphere, where Lennon and Wanyama must work hard to steer the team clear of the perilous area before the season concludes.

‘I had various destinations to visit, but after Neil called me, nothing else came to mind,’ explained Wanyama, who recently concluded his four-year tenure with MLS club Montreal, where he also played alongside Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.

When he makes his debut against the Ayr side, who are coached by his ex-Parkhead teammate Brown, he will recognize another familiar face at Somerset Park on Saturday.

I haven’t talked to him (Brown), but I’ll reach out to him,” grinned Wanyama. “When I visited Celtic to see a match, I ran into him and we had a chat.

‘It’s really exciting to play against him as a manager. Definitely, my role and the boss’s will align against him, so it should be quite enjoyable. It feels somewhat like a fairy tale; I’m really anticipating this.’

Lennon strongly believes that Wanyama has the ability to utilize his extensive experience in this new type of challenge.

The Kenyan initially joined the Northern Irish manager in 2011 after moving from the Belgian club Beerschot. He became an essential part of Celtic’s team, contributing significantly with his goal during their memorable Champions League victory against Barcelona. This performance led to him securing a £12.5 million transfer to the Premier League with Southampton.

An unused Tottenham substitute in the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool, he says he understands why many will see this move to the Scottish second tier as a surprise.

‘No matter where I’ve been, it has always involved pushing myself, striving to elevate the team to the next level,’ he confessed.

‘This is an obstacle I’m eager to overcome. I am prepared, and with luck, together as a team, we can achieve this.’

‘I have experience, I’ve picked up knowledge along the way. I grasp what Scottish football is all about, and there isn’t too much difference. Therefore, we should do well; we’ll adapt to whatever comes my way.’

Wanyama’s contract runs through the end of the season, similar to Lennon, he hasn’t closed the door on potentially prolonging his tenure should everything work out positively.

“My aim is to assist the club in remaining within the league, and once that has been achieved, we can reconvene for further discussions,” he stated.

5 Astonishing Chelsea Academy Grads Now Shining in Non-League

5 Astonishing Chelsea Academy Grads Now Shining in Non-League

Chelsea boasts one of the most outstanding youth development programs in England, consistently producing an abundance of talented players who often progress to play for the first team.

Recently, players like Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, and Reece James have excelled in the Premier League, followed by Gallagher’s transfer to Atletico Madrid.

On the flip side, some do not achieve great success, and in this case, we’ve explored five former individuals who did not make it big.
Chelsea
academy players who are now competing in non-league soccer.

Rohan Ince

Paul Ince’s nephew and Tom’s cousin, Rohan Ince, has participated in international football five times for Montserrat and has also played for several prominent clubs.

He didn’t stay long at Chelsea before getting released, but he was soon signed by Brighton, where he remained for five years during their tenure in the Championship. For the Seagulls, he made 91 appearances and went on several loans, one of which included playing for another Championship team, Fulham.

Following his departure from Brighton in 2018, Ince has competed in both League One and League Two matches. At 32 years old, he is now participating in the National League as part of Woking’s team. Simultaneously, his cousin Tom continues to play Championship football for Watford at the age of 33.

Michael Woods

Originally from York and having started his career at Leeds’ academy, Chelsea viewed Woods as sufficiently talented to invest £150,000 in him when he was still young. Additionally, he was part of the England team that went to the Under-20 World Cup in 2009, although he didn’t get to play any minutes during the tournament.

Two years after that incident, the player found himself without a team when his contract with Chelsea expired. He had only been part of the first-team squad on two occasions but did not get to play in either.

Initially selected by Yeovil, he was let go after half a year. Subsequently, a different League One club, Doncaster Rovers, took him under their wing. Following this stint, Woods experienced non-league football for the first time when he moved to Harrogate Town as a free agent.

He went back to the 92 with Hartlepool, yet he has been involved in non-league football ever since their relegation from League Two during the 2016/17 season. Since then, Woods has represented Harrogate, Dover, York, South Shields, and currently plays for Scarborough.

Alex Kiwomya

Across Chelsea’s U-18, U-21, and youth league teams, Kiwomya made 69 appearances, netting 12 goals and providing seven assists.

Although he didn’t play any senior games, the Blues attempted to unlock his potential by sending him on three loan spells. In 2017, he moved to Doncaster Rovers as a free agent and subsequently had more loan stints in the National League with teams like Chesterfield and Chorley.

After initially joining Chesterfield on loan, Kiwomya made the permanent move a few years later. Following a brief stint in Gibraltar during 2021, he has since been moving between various clubs in England’s non-league system. At present, he plays for Rylands in the Northern Premier League, which sits two tiers beneath the National League.

Luke McCormick

Midfielder McCormick scored 24 goals and provided 10 assists in 81 matches across under-18, under-21, and youth league teams at Chelsea.

In 33 Premier League 2 matches, McCormick managed to contribute a total of 12 goals, which initially indicated he could be ready to join the main squad. However, this potential was not realized in the end.

Rather than focusing elsewhere, he has largely built his career playing in League One, where he participated in 141 matches and contributed directly to 27 goals during stints with Bristol Rovers and Wimbledon.

Although League One club Rovers still owns him, McCormick is presently on loan in the National League with Forest Green.

Billy Clifford

During the 2013/14 Under-21 Premier League season with Chelsea, Clifford contributed six assists in just five matches. Notably, three of these assists were scored in a single game where Chelsea’s youth team thrashed Leicester 5-1.

Clifford laid on his three assists in just 45 minutes, having come off the bench, and outshone midfield partner Ruben Loftus-Cheek, while Nathan Ake and Andreas Christensen were also starters.

However, the mentioned threesome moved on to greater successes, whereas Clifford became a free agent two years later. During his career, he participated in nearly 75 matches across League One and League Two, but found himself playing at the non-league level come the 2018/19 season.

Clifford has represented clubs such as Boreham Wood, Hemel, Billericay, Slough, Wealdstone, Havant, Waterlooville, Ebbsfleet, and currently plays for Barnet, all of which compete outside the league system.
