Lawang Sewu adalah gedung peninggalan Belanda yang berada di tengah kota Semarang, Jawa Tengah. Gedung ini menjadi salah satu tempat bersejarah di Indonesia, yang juga sering dijadikan tujuan wisata sejarah.
Dikutip dari ebook Jelajah Wisata Nusantara, pada dasarnya kata Lawang Sewu itu berasal dari Bahasa Jawa. Kata ‘Lawang’ berarti pintu dan ‘Sewu’ berarti seribu. Namun, walaupun secara bahasa Lawang Sewu artinya pintu seribu, namun kenyataanya Lawang Sewu tidak memiliki 1000 pintu.

Jumlah Lubang Pintu Lawang Sewu

Dilansir dari laman Kementerian Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif (Kemenparekraf), jumlah lubang pintu yang sebenarnya dari bangunan lawang sewu adalah 928 pintu.
Lawang Sewu merupakan bangunan bekas zaman kolonial Belanda di tahun 1900an. Bangunan ini termasuk menjadi saksi bisu dari peristiwa pertempuran lima hari yang berlangsung pada tahun 1945, yakni antara Angkatan Pemuda Kereta Api (AMKA) dengan tentara Jepang.

Sejarah Bangunan Lawang Sewu

Tujuan awal Lawang Sewu dibangun adalah untuk menjadi kantor administrasi kereta api Belanda bernama Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS).

Menurut keterangan salah seorang tour guide, Aris, Lawang Sewu terdiri dari lima bangunan. Gedung tersebut dibangun di atas lahan seluas 18.232 m², secara bertahap dan dirancang oleh arsitek yang berbeda.

Pada awalnya, proses perancangan bangunan Lawang Sewu dimulai oleh seorang arsitek Belanda bernama Ir. P. de Rieu. Gedung C merupakan bangunan yang pertama kali dibuat dan difungsikan sebagai kantor percetakan karcis kereta api di tahun 1900an. Setelah Ir. P. de Rieu wafat kemudian Prof. J. Klinkhamer dan B. J. Oundag menjadi orang yang ditunjuk untuk melanjutkan pembangunan Lawang Sewu.

Pembangunan dilanjutkan pada Februari 1904 dan selesai Juli 1907, dengan pengerjaan gedung A, sebagai kantor utama NIS. Oleh sebab itu, jika dilihat bentuk bangunan dalam gedung A itu mirip seperti gerbong kereta.
“Jadi semuanya saling berhubungan seperti gerbong kereta api, hal itu dilakukan untuk mempermudah komunikasi orang Belanda saat itu,” terang Aris, dikutip dari laman kemenparekraf.go.id.

Kemudian pada tahun 1916 – 1918, beberapa bangunan dibangun untuk gedung pendukung, meliputi gedung B, D, dan E. Gedung B Lawang Sewu dibangun oleh Prof. J. Klinkhamer dan B. J. Oundag, sementara gedung D dan E oleh arsitek bernama Thomas Karsten.

Kenapa Disebut Lawang Sewu?

Pasalnya, karena bangunan Lawang Sewu memiliki pintu yang banyak dan besar, oleh karena itu masyarakat setempat memberikannya sebutan Lawang Sewu.Selain difungsikan sebagai sirkulasi udara yang bagus, salah satu alasan kenapa Lawang Sewu punya banyak pintu juga berkaitan dengan kasta yang dianut orang Belanda.
