Following the earthquake, the U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Thailand.
“There may be aftershocks. If you are in the area or planning to travel there, follow the advice of the local authorities or your tour operator and monitor local media,” its advice states.
Regarding Myanmar, the FCDO mentioned that the earthquake’s epicenter is located in the Sagaing region close to Mandalay City; however, effects could reach other areas as well.
The Mandalay airport is said to be closed, with several significant aftershocks possible. Should you be in the region or considering travel there, adhere to guidance from local authorities and stay updated through local news sources.
Refunds not guaranteed

A novel robotic device that enables patients to obtain emergency medications when nearby drugstores are shut down has been celebrated as revolutionary.
The REMEDY machine, billed as the inaugural one of its type in Europe, will undergo trials in Dolgellau, Gwynedd, a location where residents often have to travel 50 miles (80 kilometers) to reach pharmacies that operate late at night or on Sundays.
People who contact NHS 111 out-of-hours and require medication urgently will be given the option of collecting their prescriptions from the machine, which is positioned outside Dolgellau Hospital.
“This represents pioneering technology; employing it for this purpose is unprecedented in Europe. It’s at the forefront of global advancements,” stated Dr Rebecca Payne, a general practitioner participating in the trial.

Dr. Payne jointly led the research project to create the trial along with Professor Dyfrig Hughes from Bangor University.
“[The device] is designed to dispense medication following a teleconsultation,” explained Dr. Payne.

In case they require some medication, I can access the machine remotely, generating a PIN code that we communicate to the patient verbally as well as via text.

“This will make them feel better faster,” he stated.
Everyone cannot conveniently travel or cover long distances during late hours or on weekends to locate a pharmacy that’s operational.
Doctor Butcher mentioned that the possibility of having to travel great distances for a prescription led some patients to avoid seeking medical care when they actually needed it.

Jane Jardine, a resident of the nearby area, mentioned that obtaining her medication has been quite challenging.

For individuals whose health isn’t robust, these factors make things even harder.
The REMEDY machine, a collaborative effort between Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Bangor University, with funding from Health Care Research Wales, will undergo a two-year trial phase.

China is entering the competition to lead a new era of supersonic air travel by planning to develop an airplane that could compete with the Concorde, as reported by local media outlets.
According to reports from the South China Morning Post, COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China) recently disclosed plans for the C949 – a supersonic aircraft capable of reaching speeds up to 1.6 Mach, which would allow it to travel faster and farther compared to the Concorde – as mentioned in an academic publication.
The document stated that the initiative aimed for a 50 percent increase in range compared to the Concorde and was engineered to ensure the aircraft operates as silently as a hair dryer’s noise level.
This will be achieved using a curved plate body designed to reduce shockwaves, thereby delaying intense sonic booms that might otherwise originate from the aircraft, as the SCMP report further explained.
Lowering the noise levels is an approach for the aircraft to attempt overcoming regulatory obstacles that prohibit supersonic travel, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

Other supersonic aircraft currently under development
The Concorde, a supersonic aircraft developed jointly by France and the United Kingdom, conducted its initial test flight in 1969. Over its 26-year operational period, this iconic plane completed nearly 50,000 trips with British Airways as its operator.
The aircraft, capable of reaching a top cruise speed of Mach 2.04 (approximately 2,180 km/h), offered a journey time between London and New York under 3.5 hours compared to the standard 8-hour trip for a non-supersonic flight.
Since the retirement of Concorde in 2003, there haven’t been any civilian supersonic planes in operation. However, several new supersonic ventures are currently underway, such as the X-59 project, which is a collaboration between NASA and Lockheed Martin, based in the United States.
Disclosed last year, the airplane operates at an altitude of 55,000 feet (more than 16,700 meters) and generates noise comparable to that of a car door shutting, as stated by its creators.
