Nepal’s flying car buzz

Nepal’s flying car buzz

August 19, Nepal – Excitement is growing across social media platforms and emerging websites in Nepal, where anticipation builds around the upcoming NADA Auto Show 2025 in Kathmandu. The event is set to feature a flying vehicle, officially referred to as an eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft. This groundbreaking innovation, part of the broader concept called Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), represents a major leap toward next-generation transport solutions. Such advancements appear crucial for Nepal due to its challenging terrain.

Exhibition and execution are quite different things. The opportunities it unlocks are exciting, while the path to operation is challenging. Meanwhile, a nuanced understanding of this novel technology, its developmental impacts and potential implementation challenges may turn expectations into reality.

Global landscape

AAM signifies a remarkable shift in aviation technology, with the potential to revolutionise the aviation sector. It can operate at lower altitude and shorter range, requires minimal infrastructure and maintenance, making it well-positioned to deliver cleaner, safer, quieter, flexible and cost-effective transport solutions compared to conventional means.

More than 267 cities and areas spanning 63 nations are either implementing or testing AAM programs. Commercial deployments are anticipated in countries including the United States, China, South Korea, France, Japan, and Saudi Arabia by 2026.

A wide variety of eVTOL aircraft types have already been developed. Alongside the setting up of vital infrastructures, such as vertiports, is also gaining pace. As of February 2025, 1,504 vertiports are planned globally, a sharp rise from 1,004 in September 2024, with China accounting for over 50 percent of all projects.

Leading aviation authorities of the world released a joint AAM roadmap in June 2025 to guide certification, coordination, regulation and social acceptance of air taxis and drone operations. South Korean company OPPAV’s manned-unmanned eVTOL ran a successful flight test in 2023 and Chinese Ehang’s EH216-S received certification for passenger use. This underscores the global momentum towards pilotless air mobility. Market forecasts also highlight substantial growth potential for AAM. The global AAM market was valued at USD 11.5 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 73.5 billion by 2034.

Through regulated sandbox settings for trial flights and collaborations between private entities and government bodies involving leading eVTOL companies, world governments are backing advancements in Advanced Air Mobility. The bold NEOM urban development initiative in Saudi Arabia and Dubai’s preparedness through approved vertical takeoff and landing sites highlight the promise of this emerging technology.

Transformative potential

Connectivity in Nepal is severely hampered by its rugged and disaster-prone terrain. Dispersed rural settlements and unreliable transport infrastructures exacerbate the situation. Roads are often hard to build and maintain due to harsh topography and frequent disasters. Air travel remains crucial while affected by limited infrastructures, topography and weather constraints.

AAM offers a game-changing solution to the country’s transportation problems. It is an agile and environmentally friendly option that can bypass damaged or non-existent roads and operate in previously unreachable areas. It can improve healthcare, reducing fatalities via rapid deployment of medical supplies and personnel, including emergency medical evacuations.

The novel technology accelerates economic activities and growth, offering market access to local producers and farmers producing goods that often struggle to reach the market. It also supports tourism by establishing connectivity with previously isolated tourist attractions.

AAM can aid in disaster readiness and swift action through the rapid delivery of necessary supplies during emergencies. Aerial monitoring, real-time mapping, and fire-fighting abilities also improve efficient disaster management, reducing possible damages.

AAM vehicles produce zero emissions and operate more quietly, providing ecological benefits. In contrast to many nations that continue using harmful energy sources for power production, Nepal can utilize its rich hydropower resources to charge eVTOLs.

Apart from the transport revolution, AAM offers a platform for innovation and skills development. The youth population of Nepal makes it well-positioned to develop human capital in terms of AAM pilots, technicians and drone engineers.

Therefore, AAM presents groundbreaking possibilities for Nepal to surmount geographic challenges, enhance economic stability, and promote various Sustainable Development Goals.

Challenges to AAM adoption

Despite the promising prospects, the successful adoption of AAM in Nepal seems challenging. The absence of a legal and institutional framework, robust airspace management provisions and safety protocols, including pilot licensing for operating eVTOLs and autonomous aircraft, could hinder timely adoption.

Nepal might encounter difficulties when using eVTOLs at elevated altitudes to address its remote area accessibility requirements, since the majority of commercially available eVTOLs are built for use in city environments at lower elevations. In addition, factors like climate conditions and weather variations can influence both battery performance and lifting capability. Moreover, the restricted range and carrying capacity of present-day models could limit their effectiveness for extended or more demanding journeys across Nepal’s tough terrain.

The absence of essentials such as vertiports, reliable 5G connectivity, dedicated charging stations and robust electric grids, especially in rural and remote areas, could further delay the implementation and operation.

A lack of specialized knowledge and skilled personnel in AAM technologies poses a challenge for effective implementation. Developing local proficiency in cutting-edge aerospace technology, upkeep, and compliance matters will demand significant funding for learning and development programs.

In addition, as a relatively new technology, the initial expenses involved in acquiring airplanes, such as building facilities and educating staff, are anticipated to be substantial. This may influence financial choices and the ability of a nation with limited resources, like Nepal, to commit.

Limited public understanding of this new technology could lead to skepticism and hesitation in using air transportation services, whereas increasing knowledge will demand further financial resources.

What can Nepal do?

Given Nepal’s technical, financial and human resource constraints in the field of modern aviation, an incremental approach with extensive international collaboration is required to harness the full potential of AAM.

To ensure secure and effective implementation, it is essential to establish a specialized team within the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA), working alongside major sectoral departments to achieve coordinated efforts across different areas. A National AAM Strategy can outline an explicit schedule and arrange required resources. Utilizing existing reference documents such as the Asia-Pacific AAM Framework may aid in shaping regulations and oversight.

Global cooperation and involvement from the private sector are essential for unlocking the capabilities of AAM. Engaging regionally and globally with those who have adopted or pioneered AAM can drive progress. Collaborating with the private sector through tax benefits and legal frameworks may support technological innovation aligned with Nepal’s needs.

The government should focus on the implementation of pilot projects in collaboration between CAAN, Nepal Army, academic institutions and the private sector with regulatory sandboxes to ease testing in early stages. For initial deployment, we could prioritise medical logistics, disaster response.

To ensure preparedness of infrastructure, it is essential to design and fund vertiport facilities along with specialized charging points in key areas. Moreover, prompt funding of education initiatives for the required labor force is crucial for smooth implementation.

The anticipated display of eVTOL represents Nepal’s fascination with advanced transportation solutions, yet underscores the difference between ambition and preparedness.

NIO Enters Singapore: First Stop in Southeast Asia

NIO Enters Singapore: First Stop in Southeast Asia

Chinese electric vehicle brand Nio plans to debut in Singapore in the first quarter of 2026, marking its first market in the Southeast Asia region.

The automaker announced in a press statement released on Monday that it will introduce its small electric hatchback called Firefly.

The car allows conventional electric vehicle charging, but it also enables swapping the battery with a completely charged unit within three minutes at Nio’s facilities.

For the first time, this launch will include a right-hand drive variant of the Firefly.
The Straits Times
reported.

Nio previously stated intentions to manufacture vehicles with right-hand drive alongside those with left-hand drive for regions including the U.K. and Southeast Asia. Distribution will be handled by the multi-brand automotive company Wearnes Automotive in Singapore.

Established in 2014, Nio made its debut on the New York Stock Exchange in 2018 and subsequently expanded to the Singapore and Hong Kong stock markets in 2022, as reported.
The Business Times
.

Nio is known for its battery swap technology, which is currently not permitted for passenger EVs in Singapore, though the system has been approved for motorcycles and is being tested on heavy vehicles.

The company and its local distributor Wearnes said they “will evaluate” introducing the technology in the city-state, but offered no specifics on when or how it might be implemented.

The arrival of Nio came after several other Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, such as JMEV earlier this month and Avatr at the end of July, according to reports.

Another Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD,
currently leads Singapore’s passenger car market
representing almost 20% of new sign-ups during the first six months of this year.

Toyota from Japan and the German premium brand BMW come next with market shares of 14.4% and 11.1%, respectively.

Lucid’s 2026 Gravity: A Game-Changer That Left Me Speechless

Lucid’s 2026 Gravity: A Game-Changer That Left Me Speechless

The inaugural SUV from Lucid is enjoyable, functional, and pretty much the most high-tech electric vehicle available on the market right now.

When I
First took the steering wheel of the Lucid Gravity
Late last year, I was taken aback. However, the test drive of the pre-production model was done in such haste that it seemed inappropriate to form concrete opinions. After spending considerable time driving the company’s revamped offering, I can now speak with greater certainty about my thoughts from December: The Gravity stands out as the most outstanding all-around electric vehicle I have ever encountered.

This three-row SUV excels in nearly inexplicable ways. It drives like a sports car yet accommodates up to seven passengers with ease. Despite its compact size compared to rivals, it offers astounding interior roominess. Adding to its impressive feats, it scores exceptionally well on essential electric vehicle metrics, boasting an almost unparalleled EPA range and performance.

However, Lucid’s path with its initial vehicle demonstrates that possessing an excellent product is merely part of the challenge. Both in theory and reality, the Gravity stands out as a remarkable achievement. There’s no doubt about that.

The larger uncertainty lies in whether Lucid will manage to attract sufficient customers.

What Is It?

The California-based company Lucid Motors impressed electric car enthusiasts towards the end of 2021 when they revealed
Air sedan
arrived with a still-untouched
520 miles of range
and staggering performance.

However, Lucid’s initial offering faced limitations as a four-door sedan during an era where the automotive industry had predominantly moved towards SUVs and pickup trucks. In 2023, they managed to sell around 6,000 Air models, increasing slightly to just above 10,000 units in 2024. This represents steady progress for a new entrant into the market; nonetheless, it falls short of what would be required to establish itself as a leading automaker. Moving forward, Lucid aims to attract a larger customer base and achieve greater financial success through their Gravity model, equipped with all their advanced proprietary technology yet packaged within a larger and potentially more popular vehicle type.

The Gravity isn’t just a taller Air, though. It rides on a new platform with new motors and more energy-dense batteries. It’s built at Lucid’s factory in Arizona and technically

The launch-edition Gravity Grand Touring costs a lot of dough to own, especially if you want bells and whistles like a third row, 110-volt outlets and soft-close doors. But it’s also a lot of car, with a claimed 828 horsepower, a 3.4-second 0-60-mph time and up to 450 miles of range. A Touring version starting at $15,000 less is on tap for later this year.

What Is It Like To Drive?

A few weeks earlier,
I tried out the Cadillac Escalade IQ.
It’s incredible how distinctively these two three-row electric vehicles perform on the road. The massive Escalade maneuvers like an ocean liner. While it accelerates swiftly in a straight line and serves as a comfortable ride on highways, it falls short in nearly all other aspects.

On the contrary, driving The Gravity is truly exhilarating. You might easily lose track of having an entire SUV at your disposal due to how nimble it is. The vehicle boasts rapid and sensitive steering. No matter if you floor the accelerator, apply the brakes firmly, or take tight turns, the Gravity remains stable and impressively managed. This experience can be quite astonishing considering that it’s a large family-oriented utility vehicle rather than a sleek sports car with a lower profile.

Our friends at
The Autopian
It was aptly put when someone mentioned that the Gravity handles like a sports car confined within a minivan’s frame. This is particularly evident in the Gravity’s “Sprint” driving mode, where the vehicle feels firmly planted on the road, with stiffer suspension and a more sensitive gas pedal response. Additionally, there is a softer “Smooth” setting for comfort and a moderate “Swift” option as a middle ground between the two extremes.

2026 Lucid Gravity

It’s incredibly swift, offering the seamless, effortless acceleration characteristic of electric vehicles (EVs), with Lucid being notably proficient in this aspect. Even when cruising at high speeds on highways, you have access to an almost limitless reserve of power.

Who genuinely requires a seven-seater SUV with handling like this? Likely not many people. However, what’s appealing is that the Gravity handles routine tasks effortlessly. Thanks to its adaptable air suspension system, cruising through city streets doesn’t come with the jarring stiffness found in certain high-end SUVs. Additionally, it boasts impressive silence inside. Its short hood ensures superior forward vision, which stands out against taller, squarer rivals. Furthermore, the blind-spot cameras activated upon signaling turns add an elegant feature.

A point to consider: The test vehicle included the Dynamic Handling Package, featuring rear-wheel steering and enhancing the distinction among its three driving modes. Therefore, my insights do not cover the performance of the base model without these options.

Nevertheless, you receive three tiers of
regenerative braking
I usually stuck with the Goldilocks “Standard” setting, but you have the option to switch it to “High” or turn it off altogether.

Oh, and what about
the compressed steering wheel of Gravity
I genuinely enjoyed this concept quite a bit. Lucid refers to it as the “squircle,” which aids in offering an unimpeded view of the SUV’s display without requiring much adjustment for users due to its recognizable design. In contrast, Tesla’s yoke-style steering wheel does not offer the same familiarity.

A Massive Interior

I believe the Gravity’s spacious interior will attract many more customers than its questionable handling capabilities ever could. Given how divided America has become lately, there seems to be one thing everyone can agree on: a preference for carrying as much stuff as possible.

2026 Lucid Gravity

This SUV boasts the charming feature of seeming much more spacious internally than it appears externally. This is due to its light-filled, mid-century style, along with excellent use of space.

Standing at 6 feet 1 inch tall, I find the second and third rows quite comfortable due to their level flooring and generous legroom. Compared to similar vehicles, the rear seating offered even more space.
Rivian R1S
Or the Escalade IQ, either of which Lucid had available for comparison.

Moreover, the Gravity offers nearly identical cargo space—up to 120 cubic feet with the seats down—as the considerably larger Escalade. An oversized, eight-cubic-foot front trunk significantly contributes to this, along with an extensive storage compartment located beneath the rear floor.

It’s difficult to grasp just how spacious a car feels internally when measured only in cubic feet. Let me illustrate this for you. During the driving event, Lucid filled a Gravity with cardboard boxes and tasked me with fitting as many additional ones as possible into the available space nearby.
Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV
.

I have decent spatial awareness—if you’re looking for someone to help move a sofa up a narrow staircase, count me in—so I figured I could neatly fit all the boxes inside with ease. However, after several minutes, the trunk of the EQS was completely full, leaving behind an unexpectedly large stack of unplaced boxes, roughly equaling about three carry-on bags worth. Well played, Lucid.

A Significantly Improved Lucid User Interface

Lucid’s software has consistently lagged behind competitors like Tesla.
Rivian
The design of The Air’s user interface was visually appealing, yet lacked functionality and could be somewhat perplexing. In previous models, we’ve frequently encountered problems with the voice command system powered by Alexa. Additionally, Lucid lags behind several rivals regarding sophisticated driver-assistance features.

I’ll tentatively state that the Gravity marks significant progress technologically speaking. Behind the steering wheel, there’s a strikingly clear 34-inch curved OLED display which adds an impressive visual element. Below this, the bigger tablet-like interface proves far easier to navigate intuitively compared to earlier models. It also boasts smooth transitions tied to different driving modes, suspension adjustments, and regeneration choices. Overall, Lucid’s updated UX version 3.0 appears more polished and consistent when contrasted with previous versions seen in the Air model. However, nothing has yet confirmed these improvements will extend to their sedan lineup.

2026 Lucid Gravity

The route-planning feature now offers many additional choices, such as setting your desired battery level upon arrival and selecting from your preferred charging networks. The energy tab has been updated with efficiency advice tailored for novice electric vehicle drivers. Additionally, a significant improvement allows you to use two separate applications simultaneously across the car’s dual screens—for instance, navigation alongside audio controls—something previously not possible in the Air model due to this constraint.

I’m calling it a preliminary enhancement solely due to many features not being operational during my trial run. Both the completely new heads-up display and the voice assistant were inactive, several streaming apps remained unannounced, and Dog Mode as well as Camp Mode had not been activated. We’ve observed this same scenario with vehicles such as the Polestar 3.
Volvo EX90
, and I must say I wouldn’t want this to become commonplace.

2026 Lucid Gravity

As physical controls grow less common in the automotive industry, Lucid is taking a different path by incorporating adjustable buttons on both the steering wheel and central console. These buttons aren’t fully programmable in the current test models, but this feature promises to add a convenient element once implemented.

How Well Does It Perform as a Car and as an Electric Vehicle?

At
InsideEVs
, we consistently address these two questions in our reviews. In this instance, I would contend that the Gravity is an excellent vehicle.
because
It’s an excellent electric vehicle. Let’s begin with the fundamentals.

The Gravity Grand Touring has an impressive range of 450 miles per full charge, outperforming major competitors such as the R1S with its 410-mile range.
BMW iX
(364 miles) and the EQS SUV (324 miles). The Escalade IQ stands out as the outlier, boasting an estimated range of 460 miles according to the manufacturer, though this comes with a notably larger battery—which we will discuss further shortly.

2026 Lucid Gravity

The charging speed is remarkably fast here. The Gravity supports charging at an astounding rate of 400 kilowatts, surpassing what most American stations can provide. According to independent tests, it gained over 200 miles of range in less than 11 minutes, establishing itself as the fastest-charging electric vehicle available internationally, excluding those from China. Additionally, it stands out as one of the earliest non-Tesla electric vehicles to offer this capability.
Tesla’s NACS charging port
,enabling chargeable connectivity at numerous Supercharger stations without the need for a dongle.

These are the clear advantages of excelling as an electric vehicle. However, there are also secondary benefits.

2026 Lucid Gravity

Why does the Gravity perform significantly better than the Escalade IQ? Partly, this is due to Lucid’s dedication to maximizing efficiency. Despite having a smaller 123-kWh battery pack, the Gravity achieves an equivalent range compared to the Escalade’s larger 205-kWh unit. This size difference contributes to the fact that the Escalade weighs roughly 3,000 pounds more than the Gravity. With the Lucid model, you achieve similar range using less power and experience faster recharge times—a testament to their commitment to efficiency.

The relatively small battery pack, along with Lucid’s compact motors, contributes to the ample interior space I mentioned previously.

Initial Assessment: Lucid Has a Hit Product, Provided It Can Successfully Market It

Lucid possesses the product now. The next hurdle is marketing it effectively.

2026 Lucid Gravity

An uncertainty remains regarding how consumers will react to an aspect not yet discussed: the van-like design. Although I appreciate the Gravity’s spacecraft aesthetic, there’s no assurance it will appeal to affluent customers who prefer traditionally styled, robust vehicles from brands like Rivian, Audi, and Volvo. Additionally, cost could pose another challenge; at release, the 2026 Gravity has a starting price of $96,625 for the Grand Touring model, which can rise significantly beyond $120,000 when extras are added. As noted earlier, this represents quite a substantial investment.

Moreover, Lucid must effectively communicate the impressive nature of its fully capable SUV to potential customers, acknowledging that this has consistently proven challenging for the company.

“Frankly, I believe each one of us hopes Lucid receives more recognition than it currently does,” stated Derek Jenkins, the company’s senior vice president of design and branding. He mentioned that they are planning an extensive marketing campaign focused on their fresh slogan “Compromise Nothing.” This motto might be familiar as it has been featured in several online advertisements.

We’ll have to wait and see how that develops. However, when it comes to slogans, I must say this one hits the mark quite well.

Q1 2025 sales report.

The Bolt stood out as an under-the-radar champion among electric vehicles; it was one of the initial budget-friendly models capable of traveling more than 250 miles per charge. Although it launched before the Tesla Model 3, it lacked the latter’s allure and cutting-edge tech features. Instead, it offered straightforward, dependable mobility at a reasonable price point aimed squarely at functional utility and lower total costs. Predictably perhaps, U.S. consumers were unimpressed. There has been minimal demand for compact, economical cars overall, let alone those powered solely by electricity. People tend to favor oversized sport utility vehicles coupled with hefty loan amounts. Adding a somewhat lukewarm “Electric Utility Vehicle” concept—a sort of crossover variation—did marginally boost Bolt sales, yet it failed to fully capture America’s attention or enthusiasm.

The initial 2017 Chevy Bolt, which we tested fresh off the lot, retained much of its structure throughout its production run even as General Motors introduced updates like Super Cruise and additional technological advancements.

It won over numerous electric vehicle enthusiasts. For years, it stood as the sole viable competitor to Tesla and was the most budget-friendly option offering up to 250 miles of range, earning it an almost legendary status. I have suggested their cars to several individuals, and every person I know who owns one speaks highly of it. The Bolt holds a special place among early adopters of electric vehicles. Personally, I found the car somewhat underwhelming; driving it didn’t excite me much, nor did spending time inside it appeal greatly. However, I am pleased that such a model exists. Additionally, I’m delighted that General Motors plans to reintroduce it later this year, with

, yet I dislike that it weighs 5,300 lbs, has poor fuel efficiency, and comes with an exorbitant base price.

Furthermore, due to significant advancements in both electric vehicle technology and production capacity over the past eight years since the initial release of the Bolt, General Motors ought to present a much more attractive and accessible electric option. This type of vehicle is precisely what we require at this moment, and I am hopeful that GM can meet our expectations. Additionally, incorporating genuine rapid charging capabilities would also make a substantial difference, considering the previous limitations.
Bolt wasn’t really suited for long car journeys.

Certainly, you can use a Supercharger for a Bolt; however, it will take some time.

Nevertheless, even though pre-owned models continue to be the standard choice for cost-sensitive purchasers who aren’t opting for Tesla, it’s enjoyable to observe that new Bolts are still available. Ultimately, after accounting for tax incentives, you might acquire one for less than $25,000 at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.
Occasionally much below that.
Considering that Americans doubt the appeal of smaller electric vehicles and that leftover Bolts have been sitting unsold for at least 15 months, dealers who still have stock might offer you a more attractive price.

Based on Autotrader, there are currently seven Bolt EUVs and two Bolt EVs available as brand-new options in the American market. These vehicles tend to be scattered widely across different regions, frequently located far from key electric vehicle hubs. Therefore, purchasing one may require planning a leisurely cross-country journey. However, should you decide to proceed with your purchase, it’s advisable to move quickly. The initial versions of the Bolt and Bolt EUV are nearing depletion at dealerships, and uncertainty surrounds whether the production schedule for their successors will remain unchanged.

Rwanda’s Minister Defends Petroleum Use Amid Electric Vehicle Expansion

On Tuesday, April 1st, Minister of State for National Treasury Godfrey Kabera addressed concerns raised by the Rwandan Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Trade regarding a proposal to impose a tax on gasoline and gas oil aimed at tripling the nation’s strategic petroleum stockpile. This move has sparked debate as Rwanda advances towards adopting hybrid and electric vehicles.
Currently, Rwanda holds around 110 million liters of fuel reserves sufficient to cover roughly two months’ worth of supplies in case of disruptions. Under the revised plan, however, the aim is to expand this reserve pool to approximately 320 million liters—a nearly threefold increase.
MP Jean-Claude Mazimpaka voiced apprehensions over the contradiction between promoting electric vehicles and simultaneously boosting fossil-fuel-based transportation infrastructure. He noted, “As our focus shifts toward encouraging electric car usage nationwide, policies designed to augment traditional fuel resources appear counterproductive.”
Another legislator, MP Deogratias Bizimana Minani, warned that such measures risk inflating commodity prices significantly. For example, under the present scheme, if diesel presently priced at RWF1,647 per liter saw an extra charge of RWF329.4 added via the proposed legislation, retailers might hike product pricing further out of necessity.
In defense of the bill, Minister Kabera stressed that despite advancements in electrification within automotive markets globally, certain critical sectors including aviation remain heavily dependent upon liquid fuels. Specifically referencing plans underway concerning construction activities near Kigali International Airport located outside Bugesera District, he highlighted ongoing requirements necessitating robust access to conventional energy sources across various industrial applications too.
Data provided indicates substantial progress being recorded year-on-year amongst early adopters transitioning into newer forms of sustainable motoring technologies; nonetheless, internal combustion engine automobiles continue dominating local roadways overwhelmingly – accounting upwards of ninety-five percent total fleet registrations documented thus far throughout calendar years leading through mid-2024 alone.

However, the company pressed ahead, establishing itself as a leader in electric vehicles and debuting the most capable budget-friendly EV to date, which turned into

The market has responded. General Motors’ electric vehicle (EV) sales have surged by 94%, positioning them to become the second-largest EV manufacturer in the U.S. However, this achievement comes with a significant caveat. While the company excels in producing EVs, their top-selling models are manufactured in Mexico.

With 25% duties scheduled to come into effect tomorrow
GM will now have to figure out how to sustain its progress even though its two least costly models have become significantly pricier. This presents quite a challenge.

Our 2024 Breakthrough Electric Vehicle of the Year award went to the Equinox EV due to its excellent pricing and remarkable range. However, it’s manufactured in Mexico.

The Equinox EV starts at around $35,000, and because it’s imported from Mexico, it could have a tariff of around $8,750 for a base model. The Blazer EV will have an even steeper duty. When you dive into GM’s EV sales figures, you see how big of a problem that is. Chevy sold 6,187 Blazer EVs and 10,329 Equinox EVs last quarter.

Those numbers make them the #1 and #2 players in GM’s EV bullpen. Here’s how many sales each of GM’s other EV models recorded last quarter:

  • Cadillac Escalade IQ: 1,956 units sold
  • Cadillac Lyriq: 4,300 sales
  • Cadillac Optiq: 1,716 sales
  • Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV: 13 units sold
  • Chevrolet Silverado EV: 2,383 sales
  • GMC Hummer EV: 3,479 units sold
  • GMC Sierra EV: 1,249 sales.

The Equinox EV, Blazer EV, and Optiq are also manufactured in Mexico. Adding these together, we have 18,232 sales from the Mexican-made models. In contrast, the remaining models produced in the U.S. contributed only 13,380 sales among them.

The Blazer and Equinox performed exceptionally well on their own. Additionally, they come at the lowest price points among available options, making electric vehicles accessible to a broader audience. Personally, I opted for a Chevy since the Blazer EV had the most budget-friendly leasing option when I made my decision, and it met all of my requirements.

Certainly, the pickup trucks are presently quite costly.
However, more affordable alternatives will be available shortly.
A fresh version of the Bolt EV is expected to launch this year as well, and it’s slated for production in the United States. However, General Motors’ domestically produced items will still face challenges.
According to federal filings
Only 36% of the parts value in the Silverado, Sierra, and Hummer EVs originates from America and Canada combined (the data doesn’t distinguish between them). This implies that if every component within that 36% comes from the United States, approximately 64% of these vehicle’s components by value would still face a 25% tariff.

In brief: All GM electric vehicles might become pricier soon.

General Motors isn’t facing this situation alone. The entire automotive sector is grappling with the impact of these tariffs, leaving everyone uncertain about future developments. However, GM has recently kickstarted its electric vehicle transformation. According to the company, their EVs generate “positive variable profits,” which basically indicates that excluding initial expenses and factoring in the advantages of Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) credits they avoid purchasing, EV production turns out to be financially beneficial for them.

It appears unlikely to endure. The growth in sales for the Equinox EV and Blazer EV can be attributed partially to substantial incentives offered. My vehicle came with a $52,000 MSRP, yet my leasing cost remained lower than that of a Honda Civic.

I’ve come across individuals who have managed to secure a two-year lease on a Blazer for less than $5,000 overall, which is quite unusual in this market sector. The firm has to move these vehicles due to their less efficient gasoline-powered pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, hence the strategy seems effective; however, the pricing clearly doesn’t leave much room for absorbing a 25% duty.

The cost of trucks is also likely to increase, but to a smaller degree. It remains uncertain how significantly these price changes will compare to those of competitors. Electric vehicle alternatives such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Volkswagen ID.4, and Tesla Model Y are manufactured in the U.S., although

Moreover, with Trump both threatening to eliminate the tax credit and informing the automakers that he will ease fuel efficiency requirements, several conflicting factors remain unresolved.

However, due to the increased costs of all goods, it’s improbable to witness sales expansion for any vehicle manufacturer, particularly not for businesses heavily affected by import duties.

Therefore, GM might have overcome its initial electric vehicle challenge. However, facing upcoming tariffs and an unexpectedly soft demand for electric vehicles, the toughest fight could well lie ahead.
