Sindh’s Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, chairing a top-level conference, stated that the administration aims to achieve an “optimal” security condition in the katcha area and instructed the police to remain alert.
“Kidnapping for ransom will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” he said, adding that strict action must be taken to curb ‘honey trap’ crimes.
The meeting was held at the CM House and was attended by Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, IG Police Ghulam Nabi Memon, Principal Secretary Agha Wasif, and DIG Larkano.
The chief minister said that he wants the law & order situation in the katcha area of Sukkur and Larkana division to be perfect and directed police to stay vigilant, and he won’t tolerate any kidnapping for ransom. “I want you to be ruthless against the dacoits and their facilitators so that no kidnapping for ransom case could take place.
Briefing the CM, the Home Minister Zai Lanjar and IG Police Ghulam Nabi memon informed that large-scale operations had been carried out in Ghotki and Shikarpur. They revealed that around 500 hideouts of dacoits and their facilitators were destroyed. Between January 2024 and 2025, a total of 115 dacoits were killed, 208 were injured, and 582 were arrested. The eight most-wanted outlaws were also eliminated.
The CM was told that 91 kidnapping cases were reported in 2025, out of which 88 abductees were safely recovered. Similarly, 287 victims of honey-trap abductions were rescued.
The Interior Secretary added that although highways used to suffer from widespread thefts, this problem has now been eradicated. The Chief Minister stated that every highway within the province needs to be ensured safety and security.
Murad Shah instructed the Home Minister to cut off the supply route for weapons used by bandits. “It remains unclear how these sensitive arms arrive at the bandits in the makeshift regions.”
Prime Minister Murad Ali Shah directed the Inspector General of Police to make sure that illegal groups are entirely eradicated. “We have already stopped several cases of kidnapping and captured numerous hiding places. It’s now time to eliminate these criminals permanently,” he stated.

The people of Balochistan have endured prolonged treachery. On Monday, Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced the capture of a suicide attacker and claimed the scheme originated from a university professor, Dr Muhammad Usman Qazi.
It is alarming that an instructor responsible for molding young intellects was found to be associated with extremists and connected to the November 2024 Quetta railway station attack, representing a troubling and hazardous development.
If accurate, this breakdown goes further than one individual explosion. Parents shouldn’t be left questioning whether educators are equipping pupils for tests, or for shelters.
However, the arrest occurs within a broader, more violent context. Violence in Balochistan has increased significantly over the last two years, with militant attacks increasing by over 80 percent in 2024 alone. Quetta, Khuzdar, Kalat—each has suffered from destructive assaults.
The BLA’s “Herof” operation last summer resulted in over 70 deaths, including deliberate strikes against Punjabis. The current year began with the seizure of the Jaffar Express, as hundreds of civilians and military staff have perished within the last 18 months.
Beyond standard definitions, what is occurring in Balochistan seems to be an uprising that has evolved—combining messaging with armed conflict and taking advantage of gaps within institutions, including those found in academic settings.
Therefore, the state’s reaction should be realistic. If the proof regarding Dr. Qazi is valid, it needs to be examined in public court, rather than remaining just within media statements. Meanwhile, although monitoring is important, blaming whole organizations could lead to increased feelings of being disconnected.
Balochistan must not face yet another round of railway station explosions and assaults on school buses. Similarly, Pakistan cannot tolerate educational institutions turning into channels for terrorism. The sole means to end the province’s prolonged, continuous pattern of conflict is through justice—justice that is open, trustworthy, and conclusive. *

The leader of Balochistan, Mir Sarfraz Bugti, disclosed that a major terror plan targeting the Independence Day festivities on August 14 was effectively stopped by intelligence services.
At a press conference on Monday, Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti announced the arrest of Dr Muhammad Usman Qazi, a Grade-18 lecturer at BUITEMS University, accused of being a key facilitator for the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).
“Should a professor turn into a terrorist, you can’t honor him with a garland,” stated Bugti during a press briefing conducted here, accompanied by high-ranking officials such as Additional Chief Secretary for Home Affairs Hamza Shafqaat, Acting Inspector General of Police Saeed Wazir, and spokesperson for the provincial government Shahid Rind.
CM Bugti warned that those aiding terrorist elements, regardless of their social or professional status, would be held accountable.
Bugti acknowledged the intelligence services for preventing the scheduled attack on August 14, describing it as proof of the government’s strong determination to combat groups opposing the state.
The Chief Minister stated that the public announcement of Dr Qazi’s detention aimed to deliver a clear warning against terrorism and those who support it. “The state is facing well-backed groups associated with banned organizations.”
He emphasized that the insurgency is not rooted in deprivation but is driven by a purely anti-state agenda. Expressing concern over the involvement of educated individuals in terrorism, Sarfraz Bugti revealed that Dr Qazi had provided a pistol to a female facilitator for targeted killings and had also played a role in facilitating a suicide attack at Quetta railway station.
The Chief Minister voiced alarm over the increasing use of women in terrorist networks and announced the formation of a special cell within the Home Department to counter extremism in educational institutions. He added that 2,000 public sector employees have been screened, with those under suspicion being placed on the Fourth Schedule.
CM urged parents to monitor their children and report any suspicious activity, and called on parliamentarians to lead efforts against those who misguide youth under the guise of “Balochiyat.”
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peace but warned that violence and murder will not be tolerated. To promote positive engagement, the government is allocating Rs1 billion in scholarships for Balochistan students at Punjab University.
During the press conference, a video confession by Dr Qazi was shown to the media. In the video, he admitted to knowingly facilitating terrorist activities despite receiving respect and benefits as a government employee.
Having obtained his Ph.D from Peshawar University, Qazi stated that he joined the BLA at the behest of Dr. Haibatan, known as “Kalk,” and worked under the pseudonym “Ameer.” He kept in touch with BLA leader Bashir Zeb through Telegram.
Dr Qazi confessed to three major acts of facilitation including providing medical treatment to a regional commander known as “Sher Dil”, harboring two terrorists in his home, one of whom later carried out the Quetta railway station suicide attack and purchasing and supplying a pistol to a female facilitator for targeted killings
He further confessed to providing refuge to another extremist, Noman known as “Peerak,” for a period of eight days. Peerak intended to carry out a self-destructive assault during an event on August 14 but was apprehended prior to carrying out his scheme.
Dr. Qazi ended his statement by admitting his intentional participation in actions against the state and his position as an enabler for the BLA.

Nairobi:
Furious Kenyans have flooded into the Trustpin Travel Agency to seek repayment of the millions they invested with hopes that the agency would arrange employment opportunities for them in Mauritius.
The Trustpin Agency is linked to Mary Kamunge, known as Rish Kamunge; it can be found on Moi Avenue in Nairobi. The resolute and angry victims refused to hear any clarifications.
A female candidate with experience as both a driver and a caretaker was present among those looking for employment at the event. She mentioned that they had been informed the positions were readily available, and they would commence work right away.
“As the director informed us, the positions were prepared, and upon our arrival, we would commence work as per his arrangements,” stated Faith Nasimiyu.
People who came forward stated that the victims found out about the travel agency via social media platforms, where Kamunge promoted job openings overseas for jobless individuals from Kenya. Equipped with necessary paperwork, these aspiring candidates went to the office and paid an amount ranging from KSh. 200,000 to Ksh400,000.
The funds were intended to cover flights, brokerage charges, and additional expenses. Many resorted to taking out loans, while some even sold their assets—only to discover they had become victims of a catastrophic fraud.
“I paid Ksh.193,000 for a non-existent job,” lamented Beatrice Njoki.
For some victims, it is even worse because they were actually taken to Mauritius only to find themselves stranded at the airport without food or any other support.
As such, they had no choice but to go back to Kenya as a disheartened group.
“We were instructed to await the same plane that had transported us there to bring us back to Nairobi,” Nasimiyu stated.
“I was able to gather Ksh.430,000 for my brother so he could obtain employment in Mauritius. However, he didn’t find a job upon his arrival,” stated Erick Ochieng.
The group stated that they had informed the Central Police Station about the issue, yet minimal actions were carried out as a result.
Through her attorney, Kamunge stated that arrangements were underway to reimburse the victims. However, she mentioned that she intended to subtract the funds her firm had expended throughout the whole process.
“The arrangement is that we will deduct a certain sum which was utilized for facilitating their travel. We have already begun processing refunds for some cases; however, this particular instance stands alone,” stated the attorney.

Ibiamina Igbiri, the 78-year-old mother of Deborah Erema—who is among the 15 individuals imprisoned since 2019 for allegedly stealing Mrs. Patience Jonathan’s jewelry—spoke with CHUKWUDI AKASIKE and TEMITOPO ADETUNJI regarding the suffering she has endured because of her daughter’s incarceration since 2019.
How
old are you?
My name is Ibiamina Igbiri. I am 78 years of age.
Where are you from?
I hail from Okirika in Rivers State.
What is your connection to Deborah Erema, who is presently incarcerated?
She is my daughter.
Do you recall when she was taken into custody and sent to jail?
My daughter got arrested in 2019.
What had you been informed was her crime?
It was claimed that she was one of those who took possession of Mrs Patience Jonathan’s belongings, the spouse of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
Can you guarantee that your daughter is not a thief?
Certainly, I can. My daughter isn’t a thief. On the very day they claimed the jewelry was taken, she wasn’t present as she had gone on a mission.
What is the age of your daughter and how is she related to the former president’s spouse?
She is 57 years old. Previously, my daughter worked for Mrs Jonathan until she got arrested on accusations that she was involved in stealing jewelry from the ex-first lady. However, I firmly believe that my daughter would not take someone else’s possessions.
Don’t you believe she has had any chance to speak for herself?
In court, she stated that she had no knowledge of the jewelry theft, yet her claims were disregarded. Like I mentioned earlier, my daughter could not have participated in something like this. On the day the incident occurred, she was attending a church crusade in Mgbidi.
What reasons do you believe led them to disregard what she had to say?
I don’t know.
How was she arrested?
Prior to her return from the church crusade, several arrests had already occurred. Upon coming back from the church event, she traveled to Bayelsa State. There, in 2019, she was detained and transferred to Port Harcourt.
Was legal representation provided for your daughter through hiring an attorney to appear in court following her arrest and prosecution?
Yes.
Do you believe the proceedings were managed correctly in the courtroom?
The handling of the case did not proceed as it ought to have. From the start, whenever they brought my daughter and the others before the court, proceedings would be postponed repeatedly without resolution. There were just a couple of instances where those involved got an opportunity to address the court directly. Following these rare occasions when my daughter and the rest had their say, the court then proceeded with testimonies presented by witnesses aligned with Madam Patience’s faction. Eventually, after all this, my daughter along with the group was returned once more to incarceration.
What has your experience been like since Deborah went to jail in 2019?
Several individuals attempted to persuade Madam Patience, but she refused to heed their pleas. My granddaughter, Deborah’s eldest child, passed away while Deborah was incarcerated. This absence significantly impacted our family dynamics. Life has proven challenging for us all. Additionally, I almost met my end due to my daughter’s prolonged detention. For this reason, I relocated to my son’s home, hoping he would look after me.
Is your daughter married?
She isn’t legally wed.
In what ways has this influenced your well-being, feelings, and everyday life?
Ever since she was taken away, I haven’t felt like myself. I’ve had to beg for meals. Illness led me to be brought to my son’s home in Rivers State.
Have you managed to go see her in jail?
No, my son took care of that task for me once. I myself have never set foot there. Ever since my daughter was incarcerated in 2019 following her arrest, things have been extremely tough for me. Occasionally, I purchase some provisions and deliver them to her, or at times I transfer funds instead. Ensuring she gets enough to eat hasn’t been simple.
What steps has your family taken to secure Deborah’s freedom?
My son visited the King of Okrika and talked about it with him. The king agreed to summon several chiefs, and along with my son, they planned to travel to Abuja for an audience with ex-President Jonathan. The king provided my son and his relatives with a specific date to visit, which they adhered to. However, after this meeting, the king stopped paying attention to their concerns. He instructed them to inform my sister to hand over anything under her control; however, my son and others argued that my daughter didn’t possess anything and wasn’t content being incarcerated. They claimed she wouldn’t want to remain locked up if she held anything valuable.
They informed the king that she was not guilty of the accusations made against her. Additionally, my son and several other family members advised the king that she had attended a church mission in Mgbidi and was unaware of the incident.
What could have prompted the king to alter his decision regarding talks with the ex-president, leading to the release of your daughter?
I’m unsure. So far, my son along with the others haven’t managed to get an audience with the king to discuss their request for my daughter’s release. When my son talked to the king’s assistant seeking guidance, the assistant asked for some time to consult the king regarding this issue.
Subsequently, an assistant of the king contacted my son and instructed him to provide the names of our family members, mentioning that the king would reach out to them for a meeting. My son complied with this request. However, until now, none of us have been contacted by the king. This remains the current state of affairs.
At what point did you encounter the king to seek assistance?
It was approximately two years back.
Have you contacted any human rights organizations or government officials regarding the ongoing detention of your daughter in prison?
No.
Is it because you lack the ability to contact them?
I am unable to handle this situation myself. My son encountered one of his younger siblings, who happens to be a legal professional. During their conversation, the sibling committed to reaching out to another attorney based in Bayelsa. This was intended to facilitate moving the case to Port Harcourt for potential appeals. However, the lawyer failed to follow through on this commitment, possibly due to being occupied with other responsibilities.
Is there additional proof to demonstrate that the accusation against your daughter was unfounded, aside from her statement that she undertook a mission on the date of the alleged event?
Every time my daughter planned to travel, she first sought approval from Mrs. Jonathan. Only after receiving this consent could she proceed with her journey. Occasionally, Mrs. Jonathan instructed her to leave the key with Mama F. Upon returning, she always went to Mama F to retrieve the key again. This routine was consistently followed.
I recall that occasionally Mrs. Jonathan would entrust some money to my daughter, yet she would never dare to use it. My daughter was so cautious about handling this money that she wouldn’t even leave it in her possession. Instead, she would promptly contact Mrs. Jonathan to inform her to come and retrieve her funds.
Mrs. Jonathan would subsequently ask someone else to collect the money from my daughter. If my child had been dishonest, she might have kept that money. However, my daughter has always refrained from taking her PIN. Therefore, I felt distressed when such an accusation was made against her.
Was Mama F one of those detained in 2019?
Number 1: No arrest took place. She is friends with Mrs. Jonathan (Madam).
Given what has transpired since the incident occurred, have you managed to contact ex-President Jonathan for his intervention in this issue?
In reality, this hasn’t been accomplished yet. We are unaware of the procedure required to contact him.
What scares you most if your daughter stays in prison for an extended period beyond what she has already endured?
I’m most afraid that if she remains incarcerated, it will cause me greater pain. This situation is also having an ongoing impact on all of us at home. When she first went to jail, her younger daughter was still very young. Just think about how much time has passed; the child has grown up and finished secondary school without her mother being present. They haven’t seen each other since she was removed from their lives.
What is the age of the daughter?
She is 16 years of age.
How many children does she have?
She has four kids, and she was the sole individual providing for them until her arrest.
What do you want to tell the government regarding this issue?
The authorities should assist the family in getting my daughter freed from jail. We genuinely require support.
What are your thoughts on the repeated postponements of the case since 2019?
In my view, Mrs. Patience Jonathan seems to be exerting her influence over them, which is why the courts aren’t functioning properly. Every time my daughter and the others attempt to attend court hearings, their cases get postponed.
Do you have anything else to add regarding this issue?
Her actions amount to an act of injustice. It is crucial for justice to prevail in this situation. The court is aware of what the appropriate course of action is, and thus, it ought to take the necessary steps.
