Research indicates that the second-hand vehicle market in Nigeria has reached its peak, with many Nigerians unable to purchase imported cars anymore.
-
They revealed that the fluctuating exchange rate and customs duties are encouraging more Nigerians to opt for second-hand vehicles manufactured domestically.
-
The era when imported cars, lovingly called “Tokunbo,” were the preferred choice for numerous Nigerians is rapidly fading away.
Pascal Oparada from SANGGRALOKA.COM.ng has covered technology, energy, stock markets, investments, and economic matters for more than ten years.
An ideal combination of financial challenges, such as a weakening naira, rising expenses, and fresh import duties, is turning these foreign vehicles into an extravagance that only a small number can purchase.
This movement is not only transforming the Nigerian automotive sector; it’s establishing a fresh economic scenario where vehicles produced domestically reign supreme, alongside an unexpected rise in a new category of consumers.

Financial pressure: The cost of a tokunbo
For many Nigerians, imported vehicles have long been seen as a dependable and cost-effective choice.
However, this situation has changed. As per car dealer Nurudeen Amodu, costs of well-known models have increased significantly.
He points out that a 2003–2006 Toyota Camry, which previously sold for approximately N1.5 million, currently has a price tag of up to N10 million. A Honda CR-V that cost N5 million is now being offered at N13 million.
The sharp increase in prices is directly linked to the weakening of the naira compared to international currencies along with significant import taxes.
Imported cars become more expensive due to customs taxes
The newly implemented 4% Free On Board (FOB) charge from the Nigeria Customs Service has further deteriorated matters.
Although the Customs Service states that this charge, which has replaced the previous 1% Comprehensive Import Oversight Program, is intended to support modernization initiatives, authorized customs brokers argue that it leads to higher operational expenses.
This additional monetary strain is transferred straight to the customer, causing imported prices to rise further and turning cars into nearly inaccessible extravagance for the typical Nigerian.
The Nigerian second-hand vehicle market leads the way
With the rising expense of imported used cars, locally sourced second-hand vehicles are witnessing an extraordinary increase in demand.
Auto sellers, who previously depended on imported vehicles, are currently concentrating on the growing local market.
E-commerce sites, social networking services, and local dealerships are experiencing an influx of car advertisements from individual sellers, with increasing numbers of Nigerians compelled to part with their vehicles to cover basic expenses.
As per a Punch article, for certain individuals, parting with their car is a final option when dealing with monetary difficulties. Olumide Adegbola, an independent car owner, was forced to sell his Toyota Corolla to support his household.
“The economic situation has been very challenging recently. I can’t even buy essential items anymore,” he said with sorrow. He sold his car for N4 million, which was double the price he originally paid, simply to keep going.
A different individual, Yunusa, had to sell his vehicle due to urgent circumstances, confessing that he deceived a customer regarding his trip for selling it.
He now wonders when he will finally be able to purchase another one. This bleak situation faced by numerous Nigerians is fueling the growth of the second-hand vehicle market locally.
Buyers from Cotonou and Nigerian security forces
Customers in Cotonou and Nigeriian military units
Purchasers of Cotonou and Niigerian guards
Shoppers from Cotonou and Nigerean patrolling groups
Individuals from Cotonou and Nigerian surveillance teams
The financial transformation is so significant that it has altered the usual direction of commerce.
Nurudeen Amodu, a vehicle seller, remembers an era when him and fellow dealers used to go to nearby nations such as the Republic of Benin to purchase automobiles.
Currently, the situation has changed. Amodu recently welcomed clients from Cotonou who arrived to purchase used Nigerian vehicles, noting that their currency holds greater worth compared to the naira.
This pattern is particularly evident in border regions such as Sokoto, where vendors are experiencing a rise in customers from the Niger Republic.
Auto dealer Haruna Abubakar mentions that he currently receives more clients from Niger compared to those inside Nigeria, as purchasers opt for well-known vehicles such as the Toyota Corolla and Camry.
They are attracted by more favorable prices and the stronger value of their currency compared to the naira. Some have also requested Nigerian license plates, which they are allowed to use in their own country under local regulations.
This emerging situation serves as a powerful representation of Nigeria’s financial difficulties and their effect on local commerce.
Examining within: The push for domestic production
The ongoing crisis has brought attention back to Nigeria’s need to concentrate on its automobile sector.
Auto dealers such as Sam contend that domestic producers should create cars that are cost-effective and appropriate for the typical Nigerian consumer.
In the same way, the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDN) is diligently collaborating with the National Automotive Design and Development Council to turn this idea into reality.

It is hoped that a strong domestic industry will protect Nigerians from fluctuations in currency exchange rates and import duties, offering a long-term answer for a country facing challenges in keeping its people mobile.
10 Popular Cars That Nigerians Can Purchase for Under N5 Million
SANGGRALOKA.COM.ng
Previously reported that with fluctuations in exchange rates and increasing inflation, the resale value of used cars is going up, turning vehicle ownership into an investment.
The significant dependence of Nigeria on foreign-made automobiles, fluctuations in currency value, and rising prices have led to an increased interest in second-hand vehicles.
As per recent reports, auto sellers in Nigeria stated that the increasing price of second-hand vehicles is mainly attributed to two reasons: currency exchange fluctuations and customs fees.

The Federal Information Minister, Atta Tarar, stated that Pakistan has initiated a synchronized nationwide approach involving all provinces, pertinent organizations, and the military to address the extreme floods resulting from monsoon rainfall. The administration has implemented an integrated plan to handle the crisis effectively and safeguard people.
At a media conference held in Islamabad, NDMA Chief Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik and DG ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated that search and rescue crews have successfully rescued approximately 25,000 individuals up to now. Updates are being continuously provided to all relevant parties to ensure efficient coordination of aid efforts.
The head of the NDMA mentioned that their official website regularly updates information regarding rainfalls, flood damages, and losses. To date, monsoon-related storms, sudden downpours, landfills, and flooding in northern regions have resulted in almost 670 deaths, with approximately 1,000 people wounded nationwide.
General Inam Haider mentioned that some of the people who were once unaccounted for have now been located, although regrettably, many did not make it. Ongoing rescue efforts involve the military and emergency personnel collaborating to conduct thorough searches and recoveries in the impacted regions.
Assistance initiatives involve supplying food, medical aid, and necessary items to those who have been forced to leave their homes. More than half of the destroyed infrastructure has been fixed, with key roads and expressways currently under repair and scheduled to be completely open again next week.
Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated that the military has sent eight groups to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan as part of relief efforts. To date, more than 6,300 individuals have been treated at nine health centers, while food supplies and assistance are being provided in isolated areas with help from the PTA and army construction teams.
Authorities stated that assessments to determine the total extent of damage will start shortly, with findings made available to the public. They advised residents to adhere to safety protocols as search and recovery efforts proceed in regions affected by flooding.

The “tax policy office” in Pakistan will cease to fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), according to an announcement made by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Monday. Instead, this department will now operate under the authority of the Ministry of Finance. As a result, the FBR will no longer have the key responsibility of drafting the annual budget.
“Tax policy office is now moved into the Finance Division. FBR has nothing to do with the policy. The next year’s budget to be presented in 2026 (for FY27) will be led by the finance and tax policy office and not by FBR,” Senator Aurangzeb said while speaking at a workshop titled ‘Unlocking Capital Market Potential for Banks’, organized by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the Pakistan Banks Association (PBA).
Industrial strategy: He further mentioned that the government has been steadily developing an industrial plan set for release shortly, aimed at creating favorable conditions and boosting manufacturing growth within the nation.
“Haroon Akhtar (Special Assistant to Prime Minister) is working day and night to get that (industrial policy) through the cabinet and make an announcement. This is an important element of how we are going to move from stability to sustainable growth, because these underline pillars are going to be quite critical,” he said, adding that over the past couple of months the government has already announced policies for tarrifs, electric vehicles, creating a cashless economy and the digital sector.
Tariff Reforms: Delivering a speech on tariff reforms for businesses—especially those involved in exports—Aurangzeb stated that the government needs to lower customs taxes, extra customs charges, and administrative fees to a specific extent within the coming four to five years.
“This is essential to improve export competitiveness and also to take away the protection that we have provided certain industries for the longest time.”
In terms of the reforms, he said many institutions helped the government, including the World Bank.
“I just want to be very clear the IMF has nothing to do with it. Tariff reforms is very much a home-grown agenda of the government and this administration to make our industry more competitive as we go forward.” He said finance and FBR believe reducing tariffs will hurt the collection of revenue. “They say our revenue (collection) will fade away if we keep reducing duties.” However, “we have to get out of this short-term thinking and see what is the right thing to do for the country over the next four to five years if we are going to grow and move towards supporting competitiveness.”
Missing players: He noted that the corporate sector was largely missing from the workshop, even though they are key players in the development of the capital markets – as they are the one who mobilize funds (debt/equity) through the capital markets.
The minister proposed that the workshop coordinators establish a capital market advancement committee aimed at mobilizing resources for projects via local financial systems such as the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). Key members of the committee might consist of the SECP, the State Bank of Pakistan, PBA, companies, banking institutions, and other relevant entities, along with input from different provinces—since significant implementation authority currently resides within them.

August 19, Nepal – In 2018, Rishikesh Pandey released a compelling study in Quest titled “Religion, Rainfall and Rice: A Social and Ecological Analysis of Festivals in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.” Among his key discoveries was that the Newar community in Kathmandu faces challenges maintaining their age-old traditions because of factors such as “transformations in the agricultural ecosystem.” How can they perform prayers and offerings in their rice paddies anymore, with these areas now replaced by sprawling urban structures? I think it’s time for us to reconsider how we celebrate major national events like Dashain. My view is that although our festivals should remain intact, their observances and customs require updating—due to both financial and societal considerations.
Excitement under the clouds
The monsoon is still in full swing. Many people continue to live in the mortal fear of terrible landslides and flash floods. And yet, the festive season has begun in earnest.
Most of our festivities fall in autumn. They are much more enjoyable once the monsoon rains have stopped, seasonal flowers blossom and the paddy fields turn golden with the ripening crop. This year’s Dashain, which is about a month and half away, is going to be wet and muddy.
Notwithstanding, everyone is looking forward to the start of the great festivals. Many people living and working abroad are already planning to return to their country for Dashain. Town residents are planning to visit their ancestral homes, which are rapidly emptying. No doubt, festivals are a great source of personal happiness and social connection. Yet they are also a source of angst for many.
Too costly
Our celebrations are impressive in various aspects, yet they often become excessively costly. Many expenditures arise due to the frequent occurrence of numerous festivals. Next week marks Teej, and certain women may try their best to purchase new saris, ideally accompanied by pricey golden jewelry.
Dashain presents an even greater concern, featuring numerous days filled with lavish meals, travel, new clothing, and jewelry. Likewise, many individuals offer goats and chickens as sacrifices to well-known gods. How can those who earn a modest salary through honest labor afford these costs?
The festival of Tihar follows Dashain almost immediately, which tends to be quite expensive too. A similar situation exists in Tarai, with Chhath right after Dashain. The Newars too have many festivals of their own, each involving lots of expenses.
Drain on foreign income
I think these successive festivals around the harvest season were crucial to bring agrarian communities together in the past. Almost every house grew its own crop and livestock hence, the expenses weren’t such an issue. They probably didn’t think about buying expensive jewellery and foreign clothes at the time.
Continuing the practice of long feasts and social events, along with displaying wealth through gold, silver, clothing, or even costly vehicles and residences, appears difficult. This is particularly true in modern capitalist societies, where farming communities are quickly diminishing, leaving large areas of farmland unused and many rural populations declining.
These traditional types of festive celebrations in an era of market economy have been a huge drain on the remittance economy. Our economy is surviving because hundreds of thousands of our young men and women toil in Malaysia, Arab countries, Korea, Japan and send money home. Much of that money remitted from abroad goes into family expenses, mainly in celebrating increasingly expensive festivals.
What this has done is prevent the productive use of the remittance. It would be much better for the concerned families, to the local and national economy, if much of the remittance was invested in small businesses, in innovative projects. That would also provide employment opportunities and, in the longer term, increase the rate of pay within our own country-requiring less citizens to go for unskilled labour overseas.
Promoting social inequality
Our religious festivals seem out of place or outdated in the performance of at least some of their rituals and customs. As a result, the festivals have not only hurt the national economy, but also social harmony. Isn’t it time to rethink the rituals that openly promote social inequality?
I ponder why we continue to observe Janai Purnima, for example. It definitely does not warrant being a public holiday. This is because it is a highly polarizing celebration. The so-called higher or purer castes replace their sacred thread—janai—on this day. Meanwhile, the rest of us, including Dalits, indigenous communities, and women, are denied the opportunity to partake in the same thread or ceremony.
The concept of sacred thread has been used since the Puranic period to distinguish the higher castes from the lower ones. So, it deserves to be either wiped off our annual calendar for good-or reformed massively.
Numerous other celebrations, such as the Grand Dashain, clearly reinforce and support the traditional concept of ceremonial cleanliness and impurity. The spiritual idea of ritual purity and contamination (thoroughly examined by Luis Dumont in his renowned work “Homohierarchicus”) serves as the fundamental belief system underlying social stratification and prejudice. We have permitted places of worship to engage in this practice without restraint.
During the nine-day period of pre-Tika pujas, Damai drummers perform their musical rituals at nearly every temple dedicated to goddesses and old fortresses. However, they are not allowed inside the temple to offer prayers like other worshippers, and instead receive tika placed on a leaf. Even more distressing, they face additional humiliation by being given the leftover parts of sacrificial animals such as goats and bulls.
The same thing happens in state-sponsored and historic temples such as Gorakh Kali and Nuwakot Bhagawati and Palanchowk Bhagawati. Why are we allowing such practices to continue even in a secular republic? We’ve dumped Hindu monarchy for good-it’s also time to dump old and divisive rituals and customs.
To conclude, rain or shine-let’s celebrate our festivals. One doesn’t even need to be a Hindu to enjoy them, to have fun, to reconnect with our social circles. However, let’s also start a serious debate about reforming the ancient methods of celebrating our festivals-keeping in mind economic and social concerns. So that festivals bring more fun and less angst amongst the masses.

The people of Balochistan have endured prolonged treachery. On Monday, Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced the capture of a suicide attacker and claimed the scheme originated from a university professor, Dr Muhammad Usman Qazi.
It is alarming that an instructor responsible for molding young intellects was found to be associated with extremists and connected to the November 2024 Quetta railway station attack, representing a troubling and hazardous development.
If accurate, this breakdown goes further than one individual explosion. Parents shouldn’t be left questioning whether educators are equipping pupils for tests, or for shelters.
However, the arrest occurs within a broader, more violent context. Violence in Balochistan has increased significantly over the last two years, with militant attacks increasing by over 80 percent in 2024 alone. Quetta, Khuzdar, Kalat—each has suffered from destructive assaults.
The BLA’s “Herof” operation last summer resulted in over 70 deaths, including deliberate strikes against Punjabis. The current year began with the seizure of the Jaffar Express, as hundreds of civilians and military staff have perished within the last 18 months.
Beyond standard definitions, what is occurring in Balochistan seems to be an uprising that has evolved—combining messaging with armed conflict and taking advantage of gaps within institutions, including those found in academic settings.
Therefore, the state’s reaction should be realistic. If the proof regarding Dr. Qazi is valid, it needs to be examined in public court, rather than remaining just within media statements. Meanwhile, although monitoring is important, blaming whole organizations could lead to increased feelings of being disconnected.
Balochistan must not face yet another round of railway station explosions and assaults on school buses. Similarly, Pakistan cannot tolerate educational institutions turning into channels for terrorism. The sole means to end the province’s prolonged, continuous pattern of conflict is through justice—justice that is open, trustworthy, and conclusive. *

Dhaka, August 19 – The United Nations reported that a historic number of 383 humanitarian workers lost their lives globally in 2024, with almost half of them dying in Gaza amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas, as the organization observed World Humanitarian Day with a somber message regarding increasing dangers faced by individuals providing critical assistance.
The U.N.’s top humanitarian official, Tom Fletcher, stated that the increase in deaths should act as a “wake-up call” to safeguard civilians and individuals providing aid.
Fletcher stated, ‘Such large-scale attacks, without any consequences, represent a disgraceful criticism of global passivity and lack of action.’ He added, ‘We urge decision-makers to safeguard citizens and relief personnel, as well as ensure those responsible face justice.’
As per the Aid Worker Security Database, deaths increased from 293 in 2023 to 383 in 2024 – with over 180 incidents recorded in Gaza. The majority of those who lost their lives were local employees working to support their own communities, frequently dying either while on duty or within their residences, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The database documented 599 significant assaults against humanitarian personnel during the previous year, marking a substantial increase compared to 420 cases reported in 2023. These events resulted in 308 injuries, 125 abductions, and 45 detentions. So far this year, 2025 has seen 245 notable attacks registered, leading to 265 fatalities.
A particularly severe event occurred on March 23 in Rafah, southern Gaza, where Israeli forces allegedly targeted medical personnel and rescuers operating in clearly identified vehicles, resulting in 15 deaths and subsequently burying the corpses in a collective grave using heavy machinery.
Palestinian health officials report that the number of deaths in Gaza has exceeded 62,000
Sudan ranked as the second most dangerous nation for aid personnel following Gaza and the West Bank, where 60 humanitarian staff were murdered in 2024—more than twice the number recorded in the prior year. Additional areas of concern featured Lebanon (20 fatalities, an increase from zero in 2023), Ethiopia and Syria (each reporting 14 deaths), and Ukraine (13 casualties, up from six in the preceding year).
An assault on a humanitarian worker is an attack on everyone,” Fletcher emphasized. “Hostility toward relief personnel is not unavoidable—it needs to stop.

Asian markets were little changed Tuesday after Wall Street treaded water and US President Donald Trump held what he called “very good” talks with Ukrainian and European leaders on ending the three-year war.
Hopes for a breakthrough rose after Trump said he spoke by phone with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin — whom he met in Alaska last week — after hosting the Europeans and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelensky,” Trump said.
Oil prices, which have been volatile for several days — Russia is a major crude producer — fell back after gains on Monday.
Tokyo, Sydney, and Seoul saw minor declines, whereas Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore experienced gains.
Shares of SoftBank dropped by two percent following an announcement that the company plans to inject $2 billion into Intel, amid reports that the U.S. government may acquire a 10% ownership interest in the struggling American semiconductor firm.
A new boost for investors might arise from a speech this week by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the yearly gathering of international central bank officials in Jackson Hole.
Investors expect Powell to offer further insights into the Federal Reserve’s future decisions on interest rates during their upcoming meeting, following recent data that presented an inconsistent outlook on inflation.
“Even a nod to easing (by Powell) could be enough to trigger profit-taking, and a hint of caution could set off a scramble for the exits,” Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management said.

On Monday, the White House hosted one of the most significant and controversial summits related to the conflict in Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Washington hoping for confirmation that American support remains steadfast. He was accompanied by several European leaders—up to seven in total—who made a powerful demonstration of solidarity. Their clear message was simple: Ukraine should neither be nor have to accept a peace agreement that compromises its independence.
Donald Trump seems to have followed an alternative approach. Following his discussion with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, he again proposed that Zelenskyy could “bring the conflict to a close very quickly.” However, what he refrained from stating openly was the implication: disregarding NATO, ignoring Crimea, and acknowledging that certain areas of the Donbas would stay under Russian authority. Essentially, achieving peace through the loss of territorial integrity. For Moscow, this would amount to a triumph in every way except for official recognition.
This was not a minor dispute. It exposed the significant rift between Washington and Europe regarding the way ahead. European officials united behind Kyiv, cautioning that appeasing Russian aggression would merely encourage further actions. To them, an agreement that allows Putin to gain territory is, in short, a clear signal for additional conflicts in regions like Moldova, the Baltic states, or beyond.
In turn, Zelenskyy showed no hesitation. He informed Trump that Ukraine’s constitution prohibits the relinquishment of its territory, emphasizing that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have lost their lives protecting it. Surrendering land at this point would amount to a betrayal of both those who perished and the concept of a free Ukraine. While his stance might appear extreme, it highlights a straightforward reality: Russia initiated this conflict, and it must not be permitted to alter boundaries through coercion.
The harsh truth is that Trump’s stance mirrors a shift in America’s approach to international relations. Support for Ukraine within the United States is becoming more divided and influenced by internal political struggles. Observing this instability, Europe has started to take action. Through military supplies and economic aid, the European Union and NATO are preparing a framework for a Europe capable of supporting Ukraine should Washington lose momentum.
The Washington meeting aimed at bridging divides. However, it revealed underlying tensions instead. One perspective leans toward an easy solution: halt the conflict, grant Putin his gains, and label it as peace. The alternative path involves taking a stronger stance, supporting Ukraine financially, and maintaining that the concepts of sovereignty and territorial boundaries must not be compromised.
The decision for the global community should be clear-cut. A peace enforced according to Putin’s terms is not genuine peace. *

A 54-year-old man from Poland who lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, went missing on July 30 while walking close to Chefchaouen in northern Morocco, according to his relatives.
Adam Jordanowski journeyed from Edinburgh to Málaga, Spain, on July 25th, subsequently entering Morocco through Tangier Med prior to traveling to the mountain town, which serves as a well-known location for hikers, according to a Scottish national tabloid newspaper.
Daily Record
reported on Friday.
Jordanowski was supposed to go back to Scotland on July 31, making a layover in Barcelona. While UK border officials stated he registered for his flight to Edinburgh, his relatives worry he did not depart from Morocco.
His relatives have initiated a campaign via online platforms seeking information about his location, asking individuals to reach out to Police Scotland (101, case number 2663 from 03/08/2025) or the Polish Embassy in Rabat (+212 661 414 119).
